KFOG Dumps Tim Goodman

Goodman, the former Chronicle TV critic (now with the H'wood Reporter), has been talking TV with the KFOG morning crew for 10 years, but as he posted on Facebook this weekend:

"KFOG fans, I should let you know that the new program director isn't a big TV fan, so after 10 years of being on the air every Monday, he'd prefer a 'when TV news is relevant' kind of deal, where I appear randomly. Not sure that's a deal I'm eager to take, but I have enjoyed my time there for a decade (!) and will miss Webster, Peter, Renee and Greg".

Now, I'm sure the new PD has reams of focus-group data telling him Fogheads want more music/less talk, or that they think Tim uses too many big words, or something. Still, it seems like more dumbing down of what was once the Morning Show for Smart People.

And if Mr PD's not a TV fan, then I trust we'll be spared endless chatter about American Idol and Dancing With the Stars from now on.  ::)

KFOG has been pushing back on the above, insisting (on Facebook) that Goodman isn't being "dumped", just having his segment re-purposed or something. And that he'll be on the Morning show this week. It was interesting to see "Fogheads" hitting the station with emails and Facebook comments protesting the alleged "dumping" -- and getting a quick reaction from management.

KFOG sure isn't what it used to be and since most of the newer PD's these days have limited experience compared to those of the past (imho) it doesn't surprise me. I'm seeing more and more PD's who only know how to micro manage with little talent other than following the company line and making more generic sounding stations. We've got a former KFOG guy on at night on the 100.3 Sound here in LA and if that was one of KFOG's best, they really have dropped...

I know what you mean, tho' their new PD has been doing the format for years (including KBCO and KINK). Amazing that KFOG went nearly 2 years without a PD in place.

And just to bring this thread full-circle, Tim Goodman will be on KFOG this morning at 8:30. It's like he never left! ;)

Dave Morey, Rosalie, M Dung, John Grapone who used to be the PM guy before Big Rick. That was the KFOG I used to know

Since Big Rick moved to 102.1, KFOG's future is still in question since the Citadel/Cumulus merger. I like 89.9 KDFC, 102.1 KUZX, KFOG 104.5 and 106.9 KCBS. I like the AAA format but that's under question now.

KFOG's current PD has years of experience. It's the company that owns KFOG that doesn't have years of major market experience. And, who said the guy at The Sound was one of KFOG's best?

It won't matter, It'll be KGO-FM soon anyway :)

I think that's entirely possible. Cumulus brokers out or unloads 560 AM, moves KSFO's programming to 810 AM and moves KGO to 104.5 in SF and 97.7 in the South Bay.

Or might it be Sportsradio KNBR-FM? Stay tuned! :)

Why is everybody so anxious to write KFOG's obituary? From what I understand, it still bills well, and despite Cumulus's benign neglect, still has a loyal (but shrinking) following of many years standing.

Why not put KGO-FM on 107.7 and 97.7? If you recall, Wild 107 used that same simulcast combo in the 90s before Clear Channel sucked up KYLD.

And as I said on another thread, KGO-FM is far from a sure thing. The LA board has been speculating about KFI-FM for years, and it still hasn't happened despite the fact that Clear Channel has a number of FM frequencies they could use for a simulcast.

Finally - broker out KSFO? Why? Its days may be numbered, but I'd contend that it has a few years of life yet.
