We've discussed on this board about the difficulty of keeping commercial Adult Album Alternative (AAA) stations going. There are a few successes: KBCO Denver, WXRT Chicago, KINK Portland, WXRV Boston. And a few non-commercial AAA stations do quite well: KEXP Seattle, KUTX Austin, KCMP Minneapolis.
But note that these markets, other than Chicago, are ones we think of when we discuss cities with a large, youthful, college-educated work force. We have seen several high education level markets lose their commercial AAA stations in recent years. No more KMTT Seattle or KPRI San Diego. And KTCZ Minneapolis went from AAA to a Modern AC, trying to keep its audience while expanding its base.
Due to aging demographics, it's tough for a commercial AAA station to sell its inventory.
