KFOG Playlist

10 at 10

I realize no one can replace Dave Morey on 10-at-10, but shouldn't someone oversee what Renee is doing? The original idea behind 10 at 10 was to play songs from a long ago year that 1) were actually played on the radio, 2) have not been played on the radio much since, 3) were a blend of AOR, Alternative and Top 40, 4) had a cohesive flow with a nice blend of vocals, hard/soft etc, and 5) were spiced up with news and ad nuggets from that year. The current 10-at-10 sounds like something I can throw together in 10 minutes....pick out a bunch of songs from Joel Whitburn's Billboard Top 100 book and add in obscure album cuts from perhaps my own album collection...but never got airplay on even the most liberal free-form stations. Net result....a mess. 10 at 10 should be about reminiscence and maybe introducing a younger audience to some overlooked chestnuts....not plowing through stuff everyone knows or would never want to know.

no argument here. The quality of 10@10 has fluctuated wildly since Renee took over; it's not entirely her fault as far as song selection goes; the suits from Atlanta want hits played on 10@10. But it's clearly just a job to her, whereas for Dave and Annalisa it was about their passion for music and radio. Annalisa in particular brought the show into the 21st century by making it interactive (Fogheads could suggest songs on Facebook) but once Dennis Constantine came onboard, it was clear management wanted to rein that kinda stuff in.

In other words: someone *is* overseeing what she's doing, and they're perfectly happy with it. A shame, really. It's no longer "appointment radio"...

I just discovered KFOG the other day, and I LOVE what I am hearing so far. It reminds me of a much better version of a radio station we used to have here in Seattle ("103-7 The Mountain", which was a pretty good AAA station). It's hard to find a station that features such a dynamic variety of alternative music from the 80's, 90's and today.

I'd say give it a few more weeks and you'll realize just how much repetition of "classics" there is -- the number of times a week KFOG plays "Tainted Love" or any one of a half-dozen Police hits is enough to drive you crazy. The best things about the station remain 10@10 and Rosalie's Sunday morning "Acoustic Sunrise"

Mike, you certainly called that one; I've been listening to KFOG for the past month and it has indeed gotten stale (not to mention, I don't listen on a daily basis). I agree, 10@10 is the best part about the station, but it sounds like they play it safe with that as well. While I still like hearing a mix of music from a multitude of decades, its pretty safe to bet on the fact that all you will hear are popular classic rock tracks, common alternative pop tracks, etc. I'm sure there are plenty of listeners who would agree with everything said here.

Over the "spring" period KFOG was 17th in 25-54. Where it did best was 35-64, where it is 11th in the market.

Hey David, do you happen to know how the morning show is performing? From the time I've been listening, it sounds like they are still trying to figure out where they are going with it.

Ford Ranger, I was going to start a thread about the KFOG playlist and I was going to name the thread title "KFOG playlist is soooo ....... generic" , so kudos for a take on the current state of the playlist that is on the money! It is so horribly watered down to the absolute safest tracks with absolutely no spice. It is as bland as vegetable broth. Oh sure we like most of what they play, but most fans of the genre want some unique music mixed in. BLAH! And BTW What in hell are they thinking adding those automated recorded back announcing on the track name and artist???? Isn't that a job to be handled by the air talent on duty?
As far reserving that feature in overnights, WXPK New York City/Westchester County has PD Chris Hermann voice the back announcing on newer tracks but only during overnights.

I feel sorry for one of the best DJs I have heard, Dred Scott, who does his best in this KFOG environment. My hat's off to him.

Well, all thanks SHOULD go to KCPR_Sound of SLO for starting this thread :)

My frustration stems from the fact that much of the music you hear on KFOG could just as easily be heard on a standard AC format. I appreciate the direction in which they are trying to move, but still, tracks like "Let Her Go" (by Passenger; he has other songs), "A Sky Full of Stars" (Coldplay), or "Sugar" (Maroon 5) really don't seem like they belong on a station that is supposedly an oasis for album rock, as those songs have plenty of airplay elsewhere. The older hits get old as well; admittedly, one of the reasons I ended up tuning in via the web stream was to hear songs by Crowded House, Squeeze, and Sting that I have not heard in a while (just refer to my earlier post where I praised KFOG. If you are like me and just stumble upon the station, or don't tune in often, you'll wonder why others have complained while you enjoy hearing tracks that you haven't heard in a while). Overall, current or classic, you can't anticipate hearing anything from any of the artists that I've mentioned that fall under the category of "album".

I would guess that most terrestrial listeners don't really care or notice. It's easy to come on here and complain, but in the end someone still needs to keep KFOG functioning as a profitable business asset. If KFOG is faring well with their current programming direction, more power to them.

Mornings are 24th in 25-54, significantly underperforming the station.

.
Just two points to pick at here: "Let Her Go" was a #1 song at AAA. So was "Sky Full of Stars". And Coldplay has been a staple of the AAA format since they released "Parachutes" back in 2000. Those two songs definitely belong on KFOG. "Sugar" is a confusing choice, but I remember a few years back, Cumulus ran a AAA in Cincinnati that played large amounts of Hot AC (such as Maroon 5 and Lifehouse) to try to make it more mass-appeal. If you want to hear a great Cumulus-owned AAA, let me suggest WQKL out of Ann Arbor.

Okay, that is very true. It kind of surprised me that KFOG would play "Let Her Go" but ignore newer Passenger music. Then again, I see why it would be risky to take a chance on a more acoustic and simplified sound.

10 @ 10 - would like the audio files posted into archive

KFOG now just posts playlists of their wonderful daily 10 @ 10 feature on http://www.kfog.com/10-at-10-playlists. They used to post the audio file of the full hour and kept them in an archive for multiple weeks, providing a wonderful way to binge listen to these. Does anyone know why that audio archive was pulled, and any way to encourage KFOG to resume that practice of posting the audio files?

I can't be absolutely certain, but I suspect it has to do with streaming rights. New rules went into effect on January 1, 2016 regarding royalty payments via Sound Exchange. The biggest hit that I know of was to small independent webcasters. More on that here:

http://www.sfchronicle.com/entertai...es-endanger-online-radio-stations-6758642.php

I don't know where KFOG's 10@10 archive falls in these rules, but if it disappeared after Jan. 1 that could very well be the reason why.

Dave B.
