KFOG stays AAA with new PD Bryan Schock

It's not about their age, how long they live, or how much money they have. It has to do with how receptive they are to radio advertising.

If you have statistics that demonstrate that boomers have become more receptive to radio ads, let me know. From what I see on this board, they haven't.

There comes a time when most people have their "stuff". Not that they don't buy anything, but it generally isn't furniture and what is needed to set up a household (unless divorce comes later in life. For every well-to-do boomer, there are 10 who don't have a dime saved for retirement.

That's a good point, and it is becoming more frequent now than 30 years ago.

The other thing is that women do more of the shopping than men, and a lot of boomer women also listen to AC and country stations. So if advertisers want to hit the shoppers, they can reach them with AC and country stations.

If the youth of today are going to forget all of the music of their youth, what do you think they're going to switch to?

They won't forget all of it, but they will only remain attached to songs that had significance to them. We went through this as programmers when it came time to pare down the non-essential 1970s songs as Oldies morphed into Classic Hits. It is often lamented here on RD that many songs which were hits at the time are no longer actively played, and the explanation (as always) is that even big hits fade from importance in listeners' minds over time.

You've heard it a million times: The songs the listeners still want to hear, still test well. The ones they've "let go of" test neutral or negative. We're already starting to see it with 1980s songs ... even though we've only just started to make those the core of Classic Hits. Eventually we'll hear the same "songs that used to get airplay, don't now" complaint about that decade, starting around the time we are down to about half the titles currently testing well.

The same thing will happen to 1990s songs, and to 2000s songs, and to songs that are current today. The vast majority of radio listeners (as opposed to those who indulge their affinity for a deeper library by MP3s or streams or whatever) want to hear the most memorable songs of "their" decade but not so much as to remain stuck in their own pasts.

They won't "forget" ... and they won't "switch" to something else, just narrow the number of songs they're comfortable hearing often.

One current song that will stand the test of time is the Charlie Puth song "See You Again." AFAIC, that song is as timeless as "Yesterday" or "As Time Goes By." I could easily put together a playlist of current songs that fit in that same way. I also expect "All About That Bass" to get played on classic stations 40 years from now.

That is one of the most irritating songs I have ever heard. Primary candidate for pre-set-pusher. Not only is it unremarkable in its own right but it sounds pretty much like every other garbage rap piece. It does have that beautiful (choke) male soprano intro though. Franki Valli must be rolling in his grave.

Thankfully, I won't be around to have to listen to it but here's another song that will only be played at high school reunions or drunk weddings.

There's a version of it without the rap. That's the version I was talking about.

Every generation has that song. I can run through a few dozen you would remember.

Definite agreement there. I love the video of the Billboard Awards performance of "See You Again" that included Lindsey Stirling along with Wiz and Charlie... very moving.

There is much contemporary (in radio terms, "currents and recurrents" that I find much better and perhaps less shopworn than the 60's and 70's material that is worshiped by some.

Hello... 911? I'd like to report that Landtuna killed Franki Valli.

(Franki Valli is not dead... he is on tour playing Atlantic City tonight!)

And shouldn't we call the very living Mr Valli's style falsetto, not soprano?

Thank you, David. I was just about to say that it isn't customary to refer to the living as "rolling in their grave"! I just had a thought: Does he still sing in falsetto? He's getting up there(unintended pun).

He was here in the Coachella Valley recently and he sounded "just like" the songs I remember hearing on WLS in the 60's.

<slow clap> That was the most humorous post I've seen from you David in a long time. :) </slow clap>

Wow Radio-online is reporting that KFOG Will Have Talent Mike Pinfeld to the Morning spot and No name will have afternoon drive. I do not know how this will work out for now.

Matt Pinfield (pictured) in the morning slot. Current morning personality, Mike "No Name" Nelson will take over afternoons (3PM-7PM). The changes will take place Wednesday, April 20. Pinfield's new morning show will air weekdays from 6AM-10AM and will feature guests from all genres of rock music, as well as people from outside the music world, including athletes, local officials, actors, and more -- with Pinfield's passion, the music, front and center.
Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honored Pinfield in 2008 for his career achievements and contributions to rock music. He is currently a contributing host on SiriusXM's Lithium channel, where he shares his encyclopedic knowledge of music from the frontlines of 90's alternative and grunge to SiriusXM's 30 million subscribers across North America. He is also the host of the long-running nationally syndicated classic rock weekend show, Flashback.

Confirmed by All Access that Matt Pinfield will do mornings at KFOG

Pinfield was once an MTV "Vee Jay" and also did mornings on WRXP in NYC. He's mostly been an east coaster, so this will be a change of life for him.

Apparently Matt Pinfield is already at Cumulus under the Westwood one division. I'm not sure if this is KFOG simulcasting his Westwood one show or will it be edited to have a local lean to this.

Flashback is not a Triple A show, but rather classic rock. From what I read from that link, he will be doing mornings live as he did at WRXP.
