KFRC 99.7 Dropping "Old" Oldies On Friday

Thanks for posting this. What a station it was! It would be incredible if they brought some of the old staff back. KFRC in the 70s was the reason I got into radio in the first place. Those voices still blow me away.

I think (based on what I've heard one person from KYCY actually say) that Infinity thinks that 1550 in its current form (meaning its transmitter power, not its format) is nearly the same as not having a station there at all, which is why they feel that going poddy isn't a big deal.

The fact is that even if they get only a few listeners to KYOURadio, the station got more buzz from switching to podcasting than it had from anything else in its history, including when it became the Bay Area's first Top 40 station fifty years ago as KOBY. (The station has a bizarre history: see http://www.bayarearadio.org/schneider/ksmo.shtml for more)

If 1550 was owned locally, the owner might consider doing a niche format for the audience within its 10,000-watt signal -- remember, this was originally intended as a Peninsula station. Instead, I think Infinity feels it has a "bad signal" because it doesn't come booming into San Francisco; hence, their application for 50,000 watts for the station.

The problem with getting 50,000 watts on 1550 is that you still need to offer listeners something attractive programming-wise that will get them to dial on over.

Dean is a great guy, and has a lot of talent. I agree with ABC- who is at least better on the air than she is to be around in person. JMF at this point would probably not come back, having been burned so many times, but is one of the most naturally-gifted air talents I have ever worked with. We throw around the word genius too much, but when it comes to air work, he must be included in that catagory.
 
Carson would be a good choice. So would Big Tom Parker. And let's add weekend/fill-in jocks: Mucho Morales.

Hey! What do you know "dougeee pooo" is doing Classic Hits! Now the only thing I don't hear is this "Were K108FM! A station from Sacramento's past that killed
this same music back in the middle 70's to the late 80's until it killed us! This is the future of 99.7? Oh! Please! Next Format!!!!!!! Positive and Uplifting? In goes the Music out goes the Stress? Give me a break already!!! The voice over guy sucks rotten eggs and excuse me but Bobby Ocean was the voice of KFRC back then and the Music Rocked All The Time. If I hear "Lying Eyes" by the Eagles one more time I'm gonna puke! Thank god for XM and an I-pod on shuffle. This station is going nowhere fast! Hey "dougeee poo" wake up and smell the coffee and if that doesn't work send me an e-mail and I'll send you five dollars so you can buy a clue!

Big Tom Parker has been back in Portland for about a decade now although he recently left K103 and then KISN and is currently out of a gig. I think he'd rather stay in Portland but you never know.
