KFRC Call Letters to 106.9fm?

"...and 1550 AM."

...and I assume a return to a "Classic Hits" format? I don't know what the chances are, but I like the idea. It seems like stations are suddenly back-pedalling - 95.7 going back to Country, 104.9 going back to Alt Rock.

Despite all the talk on these boards about the Country format being dead and buried for good in the urban, liberal Bay Area - maybe Entercom decided that a 2.0 overall rating with Country was better than the 1.3 (or whatever) Max-FM was getting. Perhaps CBS will decide a 2.2 with Classic Hits is better than a 1.0 with MOViN,' or a a Zero-point-nothing with Free-FM. With Max gone, the potential for Classic Hits may have improved. I don't expect that syndicated talk on KTRB will be a huge hit, but it should be another nail in the coffin of Free-FM.

By the way - given that this IS the Bay Area, I can assume the Dixie Chicks will not be boycotted on The Wolf, but will be featured prominently on the playlist.

Sometimes you don't know what you have until you lose it, or throw it away as in this case of these radio formats! Once the money coming in goes away along with the prior format and the new one can't even match half of what was! The result is a rather rude awakening! Especially when the bills for the change over start coming due! 106.9 Jack-FM? Or, 106.9 KFRC-FM and 1550 KFRC AM Playing the greatest hits of all time simulcast in the morning and afternoon drive with the AM being a true oldies format the rest of the time and Classic hits on the FM the rest of the time. Sounds like a real winner to me. Oh and don't forget the A's Baseball too. As Sammy Davis Jr. used to sing "Somethings got to give!"

With the chance of Free FM being changed, it amazes me it was 31 years ago KFRC was 106.1, right before the KMEL came on, only in this Bay Area Radio Merry Go Round would this ever happen! Please no Cammy Blackstone, and dont put Ron Parker on either!! Put them on 95.7, far away from any possible Oldies format!!! Weve been blessed with their nonsense too long!! Kenny in Concord

Proving you don't have to be a huge media conglomerate owner to make stupid programming decisions. RKO General's decision to sell 106.1 has to rate as one of the radio programming blunders of all time. They simulcast Dr. Don Rose with 610 in the morning, but otherwise ran a weak Top 10 soft hits format on 106.1 that nobody was listening to. Despite the plain evidence of FM's growing popularity, the RKO suits were convinced that the future of radio was on AM. Of course, their primary business at that time was low quality car tires.

Let's try this...How about CBS Radio trading frequencies with Family Radio. CBS reaquiring the 610 frequency, which "could" be named "Good Time Oldies 610 KFRC" and then Family Radio getting the 1550 AM frequency(1550 KEAR). Then KFRC-FM should move to 106.9 with a "Good Time Oldies" format. Oakland A's games would be simulcast on both KFRC stations!

Any thoughts?

Yeah, pure 55+ audience, no sales, no format.

When CBS kills off Free FM, what are the chances of hearing "The Bay Area's newest radio station, 106.9 KFRC FM!"?

Who says Free is going to disappear?

Strange to slam RKO, which owned and operated so many great stations. Rko certainly wasn't the only one.up. There are countless cases of powerhouse AM top 40's for instance which never even developed FM's beyond owning a Construction Permit, or selling their FM's off, even refusing to pay less than 100K in a major market for a class C FM signal on the block. If we had a few broadcast groups like RKO today, the business would be a lot better. I didn't mention their book keepers or the ill fated RKO radio network.

RKO Radio was a class act. They paid their people and did not quibble over expenses. We should have such people in charge today. CBS

Henry,

CBS cannot own 610 Khz. because it provides a 2.0 milivolt signal over Sacramento. That added to the number of stations that counted against Infinity (now CBS) in the Sacramento market. They had to sell 610 KFRC in order to close on the purchase of KOVR-13 Sacramento. KYCY is not a factor in Sacramento so that is why they were able to keep it.

Most of the areas I drive around in the Bay Area, KYCY comes in good. Along 880 is good, 80 and of course 101 as you pass their towers near Belmont.

KFRC calletters will stay with 99.7 but will add 1550 AM

I would guess that the classic hits format will probably return to 99.7 rather than move to 106.9. My guess: KFRC-99.7 FM and 1550 AM. I think Movin' will be the format to go belly up.

Oh Shucks Im gonna miss those spots on TV! Does this mean if we have KFRC back its going to be Cammy and Dean again? I dont think so, Cammy is past annoying to me, No more Duos please!! If Gary Bryan can do KRTH solo for LA , I think we can fly solo here! But wait Gary AKA "Jumbo Jack" from the KYA 1260 days Is so much more talented and funny than Cammy could ever be! Put her on KRON doing the Traffic, and relieve George Rask!!

There is talk that Movin' will go to the CBS / SBS joint venture group that has put on Hispanic targeted stations in Tampa and DC and become a reggaetón station modelled after KXOL in LA. SBS is 10% owned by CBS, so this makes sense (at least more sense than the other rumor that SBS is taking back KNGY to do reggaetón there).

Actually Gary Bryan isn't really a solo act. He's got his sidekick Lisa Stanley as his entertainment reporter plus Bob Malik is his news reader and he uses them at various times to bounce his ideas and jokes off of and to simply laugh and support him. Cammy really is played out in SF. If KFRC does return they really should start fresh without her, but this is CBS, do they ever listen to anyone who really knows what's going on? The real problem is that a majority of the audience in west coast cities has changed. They want rap, hip hop and such and could give a crap about the type of music that KFRC played since 1966.
Even in cities where the population hasn't seen an influx of imigration it's the same. Look at people walking down the street in any American city. Most men dress like the artists they see on MTV and they ain't listening to Boz Scaggs or the Strawberry Alarm Clock. Those that used to listen to that kind of music are getting it elsewhere like their ipod or on the internet or some other method of delivery. And why not? The formats that played rock & pop have over researched themselves into oblivion and the audience got tired of it and moved on. I say this with a heavy heart because I dearly love the old KFRC, KYA, KHJ, KROY, KGW, KJR etc...

The Decision to scrap Gary Bryan in 1996, (March to be Exact) was a joke, you bring in Goss and Garrett who between the two of them couldnt add up to Gary Bryans time in radio Huh? I was not impressed, I hope the Correct decision is made if 99.7 returns its all new staff!! Everyone new! Wheres John Mack Flanagan when we need him? Wheres the (1968) Original one and only Chris Edwards,? Try this CBS, "Big Tom Parker" in Lieu of ever putting Cammy back on! Kenny in Concord

Here's an idea that might happen when Hades freezes over! We may as well as long as everyone else is kicking around all these wild ideas that are never going to happen!

Why can't Clear Channel trade KNEW 910 & KQKE 960 to Family Radio for 610 AM. Then buy the KFRC calls from CBS and put them back where they belong on 610 AM. Format is no big deal for me but what about all of you?

Then Clear Channel can trade 610 for the powerhouse on 860 AM.....lol lol lol yeah right!
