KFRC Christmas?

Looks like there is another dramatic music shift coming KFRC's way. Word is that Infinity higher ups are already nervous about the "new" KFRC's sluggish start and are sending a consultant and a regional VP to straighten things out. In the meantime expect all Christmas to dominate as early as mid-week next week. I know they want to beat KOIT to the punch but isn't mid-November a little early to be going all christmas.

Bring back the Oldies with an updated playlist. Hire Bobby Ocean to do the imaging the way it was done in the 70's. Give the station the sound & feel of the 70's KFRC! Not some dead and gone elevator music station! Somebody please
give the station some of the good airchecks from the seventies to listen to!
The current music mix needs a bit more 60's flavor and a little less 80's music!

Bring back the personality's with a more upbeat sound. Let them have some fun like they enjoy being on the station! Start out by letting the listeners back on the air like they did when they first switched to oldies in the 90's! Beating KOIT to the Christmas music is a great idea.

It kills me everytime I hear the current imaging voice and lame liners! Take a clue Infinity!

I was in the Bay Area this past week, and was almost stunned. Sue Hall sounded stunned and unsure of herself while reading a liner "KFRC the station all you'll ever need". It was a sad visit as far as San Francisco radio is concerned.

KOIT Has Flipped

According to the playlist rundowns on Yes.com, KOIT-96.5 went all-Christmas yesterday (November 11th) at 3 P.M. PST.

One interesting irony: According to the Yes.com playlist, the last song KOIT played before going all-Christmas was Boyz II Men's "Enbd Of The Road".

The thing is, KOIT is the third most popular radio station (in 12-plus numbers) in the San Francisco/Oakland area. Certainly, it's not a candidate for a format change (unless owner Bonneville Communications is extremely stupid).

The 100000 Watts.com website has a page that lists all of the stations that have flipped to an all-Christmas format. As of this writing (November 12th, 11:45 A.M. EST), it lists 24 stations as of yesterday (November 11th) at 10 A.M. ET.

With KOIT, Atlanta's WLTM, two stations in Charlotte, and probably others having flipped to all-Christmas since that update, I suspect the number of all-Christmas stations has doubled or almost doubled in the last 24 hours.

If Infinity wanted to make KFRC all-Christmas, they probably would have had to move as soon as KOIT flipped. In markets with multiple all-Christmas stations, the most succesful station is usually the one that takes the plunge first.

And KOIT is an Adult Contempoary format. Most of the stations that go all-Christmas are AC's; in fact, very few AC stations nowadays don't go all-Christmas during November and December.

I think if you have "NO IDEAS" mid november is just fine...Perhaps
Infinity should have gone all Christmas when Costco Wherehouse did,
in Mid September. NOW, This was the format (the new KFRC I meen) that was
going to crush KOIT and KIOI as one of their salesmen told me.
Interesting that there sending out a consultant, Isn't the Guy in charge at KFRC a consultant? Lets hope he and the Free FM "consultant" signed no long leases. How can anyone think this is good ? This is a classic example why "Big" radio is starting to falter, The One size fits all Idea just does not work everywhere.Originality is just somthing they feel they can't control...So let's go with somthing we can. To Bad...For Us ! Where is my Ipod ?

Gut instinct: KFRC is still feeling its way along, trying to find the proper mix of dull, moribund, Seventies music, and switching to All Christmas, All The Time would put a real dent in their effort to win over the hearts and minds of those who think that the 1970s was the worst decade in the recorded history of recorded music. (Yes, even worse than the 1950s, which at least gave us Elvis and R&B.)

Not that I think that personally, of course. I *love* the Carpenters, the Little River Band, Bread, Firefall, James Taylor, America, Jim Croce, John Denver and the rest of those great singers and groups that kept us rockin' in the Seventies!

But how can you dis America when they wrote such great lyrics as: "On the desert, you can remember your name, cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain." (?) True poetry. Of course, the Grammy for best tortured 70s lyrics has to go to Frankie Valli for "Swearin to God," in which he rhymes "you can" with "huMAN." As for Jim Croce - "Don't Mess Around With Jim" was a classic...all four versions.

The higher ups should say play early 50's music.

Let's not have ANOTHER discussion on why formats targeting over-55 listeners aren't going to fly, please.<P ID="signature">______________
