I have heard a number of stories about RKO General's sale of 106.1, and the blame was always put on the owners for being stupid and short-sighted. FM had already CLEARLY shown it's potential and was on the rise, but the owners thought that AM was still the 800 lb gorilla...which it was, for about 2 more years. If they had only waited, KFRC ("the Big 106?") might have continued to lead the local market for years...with the exception of KGO of course. As mentioned, they did simulcast Dr. Don Rose for awhile. It's always been about ratings, and KSAN made the switch to country (which was hot even in the Bay Area then - "urban cowboys" and all that) because "Jive 95's" ratings were tapering off ...at least in part because of competition from the new Camel 106. There was also competition from KOME, KSJO, and possibly others I can't recall. KSAN was past it's glory days - and MetroMedia had ratings winners with country on KNEW AM, and KLAC in LA. It's always been interesting to me that KSFX couldn't make it with album rock. I had just moved up from LA in 73, and sister station KLOS there was HUGE...often beating KMET. The last I heard, KLOS was still using that same rainbow oval logo from 30+ years ago. Jim Ladd is still there, and is considered the dean of FM rock radio. I believe he defected to KMET for awhile - even wrote a book about his KMET experiences that I found in a bookstore on a remainder shelf a few years ago. But the same format on KSFX couldn't cut it, so they switched briefly to hit driven "Musicradio" (think WABC). When that didn't work, they switched to soul music, which was a success, and morphed into all disco.
