Luckily it still has KFRC, at least the 99.7 incarnation. I remember listening to the old KFRC-FM, also known at the time as K106. Back then it simulcast from 10pm to 9am with KFRC AM, but when separate it was automated as America's Only Top 20 Research Station with Charlie Van ------ on the ID's
Glad to see the censorship software is still working!Would that be Charlie Van Woman-who-loves-women? LOL!

Yeah, at first I thought I had mis-typed, but soon realized it was censorship software. That's one word that I didn't think would get censored, but I never use it in that waymyself so it never occured to me..

That's truly ridiculous. So I guess I couldn't talk about the Dick Van Youknowwho Show on the classic TV board either...or talk about Dutch flood control. Oh - I guess those are "dikes." Let's see if that spelling is censored. I read recently that (Those people) on Bikes tried to copyright their group name, but were turned down by the government because that word was disparaging to a minority. I recently heard Sam Donaldson talking about the censorship filters on the internet at ABC. He said that reporters couldn't do internet research on subjects like breast cancer because the filters would key on the word breast and deny access...as if the American Cancer Society ran pornographic websites.

Well if that's the trade-off we make for less moderator intrusion I can live with it, but I do find that particular word to be an odd one for the software to block. It's not even that common a slur around my neck of the woods. Oh and it did cross my mind that Mary Tyler Moore couldn't post anything about her old TV husband. It's all just a hoot, but I applaud the owners for giving us less moderator while still trying to insure a cleaner site...

There are actually boards where the software censors words-within-words, so that "classic" would become "cl***ic", for example. KFOG's Blog pages do that to posted comments. So at least ours doesn't go that far.

I guess I'm naive...when I read CalGuy's message, I assumed he couldn't think of Charlie Van____'s last name. Around MY neck of the woods (Bernal Heights SF), the "D" word is embraced by my many of my so-inclinded nieghbors as a badge of pride...much as gay men now embrace the former epithet "Q_____." But back to radio, or "now, on with the countdown," as Casey Kasem used to say.I have heard a number of stories about RKO General's sale of 106.1, and the blame was always put on the owners for being stupid and short-sighted. FM had already CLEARLY shown it's potential and was on the rise, but the owners thought that AM was still the 800 lb gorilla...which it was, for about 2 more years. If they had only waited, KFRC ("the Big 106?") might have continued to lead the local market for years...with the exception of KGO of course. As mentioned, they did simulcast Dr. Don Rose for awhile. It's always been about ratings, and KSAN made the switch to country (which was hot even in the Bay Area then - "urban cowboys" and all that) because "Jive 95's" ratings were tapering off ...at least in part because of competition from the new Camel 106. There was also competition from KOME, KSJO, and possibly others I can't recall. KSAN was past it's glory days - and MetroMedia had ratings winners with country on KNEW AM, and KLAC in LA. It's always been interesting to me that KSFX couldn't make it with album rock. I had just moved up from LA in 73, and sister station KLOS there was HUGE...often beating KMET. The last I heard, KLOS was still using that same rainbow oval logo from 30+ years ago. Jim Ladd is still there, and is considered the dean of FM rock radio. I believe he defected to KMET for awhile - even wrote a book about his KMET experiences that I found in a bookstore on a remainder shelf a few years ago. But the same format on KSFX couldn't cut it, so they switched briefly to hit driven "Musicradio" (think WABC). When that didn't work, they switched to soul music, which was a success, and morphed into all disco.

The only problem with 106.1 KFRC FM when simulcasting was that the AM feed was in mono. I can still hear the legal ID with John Mack Flanagan's quick "AM and FM" before the sing. I wonder, which frequency has better coverage, the old KFRC FM or the new 99.7?Ahh KSAN, it was wonderful while it lasted, and perhaps a little more creative thinking could have kept it competitive, but you're right, there were others banging on the door, and that was when the rock format reigned supreme all over the nation. As for KSFX, I knew two deejays who spent time there, one was Bill Stairs who worked there when they were album rock when he was just a teenager and the other, a great lady who will remain nameless to protect her innocence when they were the much more dance oriented "Beat of the Bay" in the early 80's. For some reason ABC just never seemed to give it the budget or push that it needed. As I recall long time KFOG morning man Dave Morey did mornings at KSFX in the early 80's as well. Proving that great talent transcends any format.
