KFRC IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

whatever happened to the old kfrc mobile studio? when i was a kid, that thing was the ****!
:)

Kenny in Concord lives in it ;)

The old KFRC mobile studio ("The Sturgeon) was sold or donated in 2005 to a Public Radio Station in The Salinas Monterey Market.

Wrong , again Laffer, Movin still has it, they currently use it for the Movin dancers dressing room!! Kenny in Concord Say Goodbye Laffer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if anybody pointed it out, but K-Earth 101 in Los Angeles -- which began patterning itself more and more after its ancestor station, 93/KHJ -- now finds itself in the ratings Top Ten, with an expanded Oldies playlist and more "traditional" Drake style.

I'm not sure if he's still doing it, but at least up until a few months ago, Bill Drake was consulting K-Earth's programming. Some of you may jump in and say that's not necessarily a good thing. I say it is.

I did point out earlier in the thread (or perhaps it was that weird "Pope" thread...who can remember?) that KRTH's ratings were up. Their PD Jhani Kaye is given much of the credit

I would agree that Drake consulting to K-Earth is a good thing. As far as I'm concerned, the old late 90s and early 2000s Mike Phillips K-Earth was unlistenable...Apologies to Mike who was apparently a great guy - RIP. But I'd visit LA for a week, and get sick of K-Earth after about 2 days - between the 300 song playlist, and the DJs limited to about 10 seconds of talk, and rarely if ever mentioning the songs. I remembered the great Johnny Hayes from growing up in LA...hearing him on KRTH was just sad. Was it live, or was it voice-tracked? Didn't matter. KFRC was much superior in those days, in my opinion.

But while making the switch to mostly 70s and 80s, whoever was responsible (Kaye or Drake?), expanded the play list and made it a much more interesting station.

"RKO was the original owner."

Yes - RKO General was the owner of 610/KFRC in its Top 40 days - I believe they had owned the station since the 1940s, possibly earlier, along with Bill Drake "flagship" station KHJ AM, KHJ-FM (later KRTH), and KHJ-TV9 in Los Angeles. RKO also owned KFRC-FM 106.1 before the brainiacs sold it in the late 70s to the company that started KMEL. But they never owned 99.7. As I remember it (and I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong), 610AM was running standards as "Magic 61" in the late 80s and into 1990 or 1991. The company that bought X-100 (99.7) - I guess it's either Evergreen or Bedford - also bought 610AM from RKO, dumped the standards and ran Oldies as a simulcast from the get-go.

David (Boss Radio DJ). Look - we're thrilled that you have a new baby, but we need your expertise, and you're going to have to stop using that baby as an excuse to avoid commitment to the radionerds. Where are your priorities, man?

You're correct, Don Lee purchased KFRC-AM in 1926 from it's original owners. He did also owned KHJ in LA and it would later be joined by what at the time was Earl C. Anthony's KFI Channel 9. RKO-General bought KFRC from the Don Lee organization in 1949 and held the license into the 1980's. KFRC-FM was sold by RKO to Century Broadcasting (owners of KWEST in Los Angeles) in the late 70's so that they could purchase an FM in Denver. That sale never happened because of the troubles that RKO had with the FCC. I believe that's how Harry Nelson ended up at 610 as he left WRKO in Boston to be the PD of the Denver station, but since the sale never happened he was brought to SF by I believe Les Garland. I still remember being at Day on the Green #4 in July of 1978. It was Mick Jagger's 36th birthday and KMEL was brand new and making its presence felt at the show with several promotions.

I should add that KFRC is one of two RKO stations that could boast that both Harry and Terry Nelson worked on the air there. In 1975 Terry was doing drive-time at 99X/WXLO in New York and Harry would fly down from Boston' WRKO to pull a few weekend shift. I've been told they used to joke that they were the Nelson Brothers!

Does anyone happen to know who was KFRCs PD in 1967?

Carol Archer was the MD at that time, as she mentioned in a recent column at Radio & Records, where she's been the Smooth Jazz Editor for alomost 14 years.

Thanks.

Don't know if he was there all year, but Les Turpin was KFRC PD in 1967. He came from Bill Drake's Boss Radio KGB in San Diego along with Jay Stephens, and Tom Maule.

Re: KFRC IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The changes start on May 16,

The changes start on May 16, 2017! Is it soup yet? If so whom would want any? Might be pretty nasty!

"The changes start on May 16, 2017!"

What? We have to wait ten years? The aging "Oldies" demographic will be pushing 70 by then. Maybe KFRC can sell advertising for Medicare supplementals, oxygen home delivery, and fake herbal anti-Alzheimer's remedies.

Carol is terrific...she was MD at KFRC until sometime in 1970 or 1971.

Turpin wasn't PD at KFRC all year...in fact, he arrived late in the year. The first issue of Rolling Stone (November 9, 1967) reports on the departure of KFRC's first PD, Tom Rounds.

Turpin was replaced by Ted Atkins sometime in 1969 and went to WCBS-FM. No one seems to know anything about his life after that.

Atkins was another short-timer PD...replaced by Paul Drew in 1970 (it was actually a case of 3 RKO PDs trading jobs...Atkins went to KHJ, replacing Jim O'Brien, who took Drew's place at CKLW). The rest of the pre-1986 KFRC PDs:

1971-1973: Sebastian Stone
1973-1977: Michael Spears
1977-1980: Les Garland

(Johnny Williams' 440.com site shows Chuck Martin, who'd just left KHJ as PD at KFRC in late 1980...I don't remember that, but it could have been a temp gig).

1980-1984: Gerry Cagle
1984-1985: Mike Phillips
1986: Dave Sholin

Wasn't Joe Conrad PD for awhile or did he just do morning drive?

Hmm, good question. I know that Sean Conrad was PD at KHJ in the early 70's and also programmed SF's KCBS-FM 97 in 79 or 80 if my memory isn't failing me. Could he have been the same man?

The Dallas board is speculating today that KFRC-fm is "movin'" back to "oldies" on May 16.

Just curious, after reading every breathtaking post here ... who knows this for f-a-c-t? How does this "he said he knows" stuff get out there without attribution? I mean, a week to go and the word hasn't officially leaked from sources to this board? It's on the Dallas board? Next, we'll hear that Verne White will be PD and Kenny in Concord will be Music Director...

But, dang, if it were only true...the Big 106.9.

Would that be worth buying an HD radio?

"The Dallas board is speculating today that KFRC-fm is "movin'" back to "oldies" on May 16."

I seriously doubt it. I was listening for awhile today - they're ramping up the energy quite a bit, including heavy promotion of a contest of some kind. I guess stranger things have happened - but it seems like a lot of trouble to go to when you're flipping formats in a week.

They've also been advertising more heavily on TV with those wiggling butt advertisements. I'd speculate that they've decided to give MOViN one more full rating period, so they're putting some energy into getting the numbers up.

Nationwide, I hear the Free-FMs are making the "bold" move of re-branding...in other words, the same old programming called something else. So far it looks like Dan Mason is just tinkering, not making any big moves.

Is Les Moonves reputation not riding on the success of Free-FM and the Jack format around the country also? The original rumor of changes at MOVin said the changes should occour around the first of September 2007 nearly two books to go. My guess is that MOVin will still be around next May. I'm hearing it in a lot of business places around the bay area. and when I mentioned that it might be going away, I was told that they shouldn't change a thing because it sounds great and that the station plays everything. The question is: Is that enough to save it?

I wouldn't think so. The radio professionals on this board always remind us that radio is a business. Even if your listener demographic is a desirable one for advertisers, low ratings are still low ratings. MOViN's ratings MOVeD way down from the last "Classic Hits" rating period, and have barely MOVeD up since, despite the addition of the morning show and other DJs. If Max was a loser at 1.3, how can 99.7 continue on with a 0.9? On the other hand, it seems like some of the local CBS stations have stayed with their formats for years despite low ratings.

It seems that nearly everyone on these boards beats K-Earth up. I'm not joining the fray. The last time I listened OTA was in January 2006, driving from LAX to San Diego...yes, San Diego. Loud and clear within the city limits! 58 Kw off of Mt. Wilson really does get out! In the 100 plus miles I drove, I never felt the need to hit the seek button on the rental car radio. Not that I'd need to; having been stationed in SoCal, I know the dial well. KRTH is probably the only CBS station I enjoy listening to. And if Jhani is doing the Drake thing, so much the better. I sometimes listen to their stream, now that it's up, but BossRadioDJ's recreation of "The Big 610" has become a new favorite. Good stuff!!

If the K-earth bashers want to hear a terrible oldies station, listen to the stream from 98.1 WOGL Philadelphia. Same crappy 20 Motown and Philly soul songs played over...and over...and over :(
