KFRC - My Side of the Story

But radio has always been a business, back to the days in the 1920s when companies such as RCA started stations in order to sell the radios they made.

Well, two stabs at bringing back some semblance of KFRC during its 70s golden years have failed. I think it's a safe bet to say that if the personality format really worked today that everybody would be doing it, not just KFRC.

But personality doesn't work today except in talkradio.

And then there's the naked truth nobody wants to talk about: If a KFRC-type station is going to get under-50 demo numbers, it's not going to do it with 60+ year old voices. Sorry to say that, but age does figure into the equation. People prefer to hear people their own age, especially when they're in their 20s to 40s.

While I'm not trying to make this the pick on David Kaye thread - I have to question your "truth that nobody wants to talk about." How would you explain the continued success of Don Bleu on Star 101.3? Don is about 60 years old - as old as John and Bobby. His first claim to fame was KDWB Minneapolis (sister to KFWB...and KEWB) in the mid 60s. Nobody cares that the voice playing Hot AC tunes in the morning is wrinkled and topped with gray hair. It's the format that attracts the demographic - not the voice. It's not television.

Many of the KFOG jocks are eligible for AARP memberships, though less so, perhaps, with the retirement of Dave Morey.

Try clicking on the page for the Bay Area's #1 music station - the "KOIT People" page (http://www.koit.com/pages/711202.php). At least 50% gray haired Bay Area radio vets...wasn't Larry Ickes on KSAN Jive 96 in the early 70s? I wouldn't count on Laurie Sander's blonde hair being real either.
