Yesterday I got Boss Jock 1947 P.O.ed at me, today I'm going to defend him a little. He DID say that this supposed rebirth of KFRC would be Classic Hits of the 70s and 80s. That could mean a lot of things, but if the station concentrates on hits from the late 70s through the 80s, it should be targeting a 35-54 demo, shouldn't it? He didn't claim that KFRC is going to be playing 60s "oldies" again. I don't know what K-Earth's revenues are like (David Eduardo could probably tell us), but the station is still viable for now, and seems to be getting higher ratings since Jhani Kaye started running the show. The recent experiences with MOViN and Jack in many markets would seem to indicate that no great new innovative music formats are being invented lately that mean success and big ratings. So it makes sense to reconsider formats with a track record of success, like Classic Hits or Country, even if the "target demo" isn't ideal.
Jhani has done a great job with KRTH, and the Winter book showed good 25-54 growth for the first time. His refreshing is all inclusive, including music, segues, jock presentation, promotion. It's just a better station, and is still a top biller... there looks like a chance it will grow this year, too.
I think the gamble (you just can't recearch "mood" and predictive behaviour unless you use Miss Cleo Radio Research, Inc.) with strong, creative personalities and broad based hits of the 70's and 80's would be a safe gamble, given how bad some of the CBS stations are now. In a field of very bland presentations and stock morning giggleing morning shows, this would stand out.
I hope they do it, as the juke-box-with-an-antenna approach is so vulnerable to alternative media and so boring. If they get folks like John Mack Flannagan, I would sure listen when in the area! The nice thing is that the market had so many good talents... what fun to hear them again.
Hey, I can even remember listening to Dr. Don Rose airchecks beside the pool in Puerto Rico... he was one of my all time heros.
