KFRC's History Of...Weekend

"Bill's very much alive...retired and in Los Angeles."

And should be -because he's hardly an old man by modern standards. I don't know his DOB, but he's most likely in his early or mid 70s. Like many, he started in radio as a very young man, but unlike many others - became ultra-successful as a radio programmer at a young age - in his late 20s or early 30s, probably.

He recently wrote to Don Barrett at laradio.com in response to a minor controversy started by his former PD at KHJ - Ron Jacobs, also very much alive in Hawaii.

I think the early deaths of Robert W. Morgan and The Real Don Steele (both 61, 10 and 11 years ago, respectively) and Dr. Don Rose (in his mid-60s 3 years ago) have some of us thinking the Boss Jocks have reached natural die-off age. Not true. Cancer claimed Morgan and Steele and a heart attack DDR, but they were by no means old men.

Bill might be just 70...a good deal younger than Chuck Blore, who's still touring the country and giving speeches on effective and entertaining advertising.

Unless I'm mistaken he's 71, which would put him at 29 when he came up with the Drake format. Funny that he never seemed young to me. So, he must have been 46 when he narrated the HOR&R series. I take it back: it does sound like him, but much more conversational than I'm used to hearing. He did a good narration job.

As one who owns a CD version from the master of the Bill Drake narrated version of the HRR, it was cut to 36 hours The set I got two years ago cam from then KEN R.'s former jingle company in Toledo, just prior to his going into retirement.

From correspondence, Ken sold out of the 300 copies of the stereo series that was sold for several hundred dollars each. Here's the listing of the 1981 version narrated by Bill Drake:

I have an original reel-to-reel of a studio dub of the Robert W. Morgan KHJ promos for the HRR.

Here's the run-down list of the 36 hours that were offered for sale:

Thanks for the informative list.....I recorded over 75% of the entire HRR program....KFRC completely skipped segment 50 (Olivia,Andy Gibb, KR)...Is that segment unavalible? They did'nt play it late Sunday/early Monday..........and now this evening also........

It just occured to me, is this what CBS did as they changed WCBS back from JACK-FM to OLDIES 101 in New York? I believe they did the "H of RnR".

I'm not sure you can draw too many conclusions from that. Running the premiere "rockumentary" from the Top 40 era is a fairly obvious thing to do to fill airtime during a transition. The buzz might create some minor excitement and a small ratings bump...and it will certainly retain more audience than one of those silly "stunting" things repeated endlessly on a tape loop.

The cynical side of me is figuring that CBS will just tweak the play list a little, but make very few other changes to the current "on the cheap" KFRC. We've been comparing to KRTH and WCBS, but those two stations are in the top 2 markets. CBS may be thinking that a station in market #4 doesn't deserve any increased budget for jocks, advertising, or whatever.

I was thinking that CBS is going to try to emulate some of WCBS' sound onto KFRC. I wouldn't be surprised if their imaging has a similar tone with a tweaked playlist. Maybe a new V/O person? One can only wish. And as the saying goes...Only time will tell!

That VO Guy is absoulutly, positivley, with out a doubt, the worst VO I ever heard! That voice is past annoying... I would rather hear a half dozen commercials! Since Bobby Ocean isnt part of KFRC now, they are missing a key player! With all the thousands of dollars they spent on the Movin Dancers spot,,what a frugal move not throwing some money out there for real VO!! Steve Jordan is a much better choice,, or Joe Ike,,, or Sam Van Zandt,, where are these guys? Or Chris Edwards,,, or Sal Casteneda,,, and last Candi Chamberlin,,, kenny in Concord

Well, Kenny.Don't worry - I've got you covered. As you know, I'm a very important person because I know a guy who's first cousin is Dan Mason's cleaning lady's live-in boyfriend. We're getting the word to Dan that he should hire Cammy Blackstone to be the voice-over gal for the new improved KFRC. I'm doing it because we know how much you love her.

No, no need to thank me.

I hear that Cammy Blackstone is resigning from FSN Sports Network. She has completed some Learning Annex classes. She is ready to V/O (Live if needed) the new and improved K F R C!!!

Well if any PDs out there are paying attention, my demos are at http://ericweaver1.voice123.com/ and I will work cheaply...

Too bad Kelly Donohue is already contracted in this market. 'course, I don't know if her schtick would really work for KFRC, now't I think about it...

Any interest so far? I have never heard of anyone getting work from a v/o site (or after graduating any of those Learning Annex v/o classes, either), but I am always interested in hearing success stories.

The v/o work I've gotten in the past was (1) spots I sold, (2) working within a company that bought time (Charles Schwab, in one case), (3) meeting someone in a bar at random and casually mentioning that I did such work, and they turning out to be a media buyer, (4) stations I worked for that liked my delivery.

I also go on Beau Weaver's advice that v/o is good storytelling. This explains how people like John Bartholomew Tucker, Dick Cavett, and such can have careers in it.

The Bay Area was punished long enough with the Parker- blackstone regime! Blackstone would be a sad excuse for VO,,, could you imagine how rejected Bobby ocean would feel? He was in radio when she was in day care,,,, I dont think there are 10 people who care for her! Cammy thanks for some of the most annoying radio ever heard! They need to team her up at WCBS,, for an all new Ron and Cammy Show! The 90s would have been much more enjoyable with out their annoying voices and no talent tactics! Its gotta be money if they bring her in! Pay peanuts, get Monkeys!!!!!!!!!! Kenny in Concord

Michael is right...as usual...or close enough. I found this Time Mag article from August 1968 online. He was 31 in that year, so he was born in 1937, and he's now 70 or 71. That means he was just 24 when he was PD and morning DJ at KYA, and 28 when Boss Radio hit the airwaves in 1965 at KHJ.

Time took a rather disapproving attitude toward Drake...in fact, the article is titled "The Executioner."

It's helpful to remember that in 1968 TIME magazine was written for 40 year olds by 40 year olds who lived and breathed New York...and probably had friends at the old WOR-FM.

Back to the History of Rock & Roll for a moment. I stumbled into an Reelradio aircheck of Charlie Tuna on 93/KHJ starting at 5:00PM on Sunday February 23, 1969 - "39 Years Ago (almost) Today," as Bill Drake might have said.

The H of R&R had just ended before Tuna's show. Tuna talks about it quite a bit, and Drake (who was KHJ's VO guy) announces how you can get your very own copy of the entire broadcast.

So the original air date - Friday February 21, 1969. Pardon the repetition if somebody else said this earlier in this thread.

The "Charlie Tuna Tune-In" is great, too. Here's a link for those who are interested. Reelradio requires a $12 annual fee (worth it).
