I realize that in the grand scheme of things, this is something you won't even see on a Trivial Pursuit card, but it's been eating at me for a little while now, and that is...

Does anyone know when KFRC moved to 415 Bush from 1000 Van Ness?

Everybody knows they were on Bush (that's where the station was when it became the legendary "Big 610"), but it doesn't seem like very many know (or care) that they were in the old Don Lee Cadillac dealership building for a generation (over 25 years) before that. KFRC still had all the power of a garage door opener (like all stations did at the time) when Lee bought it and moved it there, I believe, in 1927. It was still there in 1954. But Dave Diamond mentions "burn(ing) from Bush" in 1968. And I'm assuming that Van Amburg worked at the Bush facility (I've heard an October 1964 aircheck of him). And knowing what a treasure trove of info you guys and gals can be, I figured it couldn't hoit to ask. That's me...a history geek. I'm sure there's someone out there who knows who Royce Johnson's landlord was in 1966. Or Jim Carson's favorite restaurant. Or Les Turpin's mother-in-law's maiden name. ;D

Yeah, according to the Bay Area Radio museum, KFRC's transmitter was moved from the top of the Lee building to Islais Creek in 1958, then across the bay to the KRE tower in 1968, where it remains to this day. Thanks BossRadioDJ!

Maybe the transmitter move coincided with the studio move...thanks again, Michael. :)

KFRC satrted at the Whitcomb Hotel in San Francisco in 1924, moved to the Don Lee Cadillac building at 1000 Van Ness in 1927, and to 415-425 Bush Street in the Summer of 1958. The move to 500 Washington Street took place in early 1985.

RKO General divested itself of its last radio property -- KFRC -- in April 1991.

If you'd like to have an up-close look at the mighty Big 610's transmitter, which now serves Family Radio's 610/KEAR, there will be an open house at KRE in Berkeley, under the giant radio tower on Ashby Avenue, on Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The most highly excellent Carter B. Smith (ex KRE, KSFO, KNBR, KFRC and KABL) will host the event, sign autographs and pose for pictures. You can also have your picture taken in the same studio that was used by Wolfman Jack in "American Grafitti."

I'll be there, manning the radio museum's table; no autographs or photos, please.
