KFRO AM

I notice that KFRO suddenly sounds a LOT better. A new transmitter perhaps? If so, it is probably just in time for the Longview Lobo's Football coverage.

I still think it needs more work. The signal is still weak..it used to cover Kilgore fine at night but since Waller let it go to hell it barely gets here, and Access one still hasn't fixed it.

The modulation is up where it should be, but it's still too compressed. It has that old single-band "sump pump" processing that punches big holes in the audio (same with KBGE 1240.). KWRD has an Opitimod AM and thats why their audio sounds so good.

BTW KEES 1430 is having low modulation problems again. I wish Access One, Gleiser and CC would spend a little money to upgrade the processing for their Longview area AM stations.

And speaking of the little engine that could, how's "The People's Choice" doing these days? Is Phillip still a one-man show?

I'm no longer in earshot, so that's why I'm asking....

KWRD has a decent signal, and it it is getting listeners. It sounds better than most local AM's. It is still a one-man show, from a guy who is dedicated to serving his community. That's good. Phillip is doing Henderson HS Football this year. I'm not sure how that works out with his 16 watt (or whatever it is) night time authorization. I guess we'll see.

Im not sure if KWRD has nightime athority anymore, its for 83 watts.. enough to cover Henderson. I bet Russel dropped the ball again on licensing for it.

It looks like the original date of the "plan" for using 83 watts was in 1987 so maybe it's a case of the previous owner not acting on it. Russell might actually have been unaware of its existence. In any event, reviving the "plan" would involve an updated set of measurements and would be like applying for nighttime all over again.

I don't know about the past but KWRD's current post-sunset authorization starts at 71 watts but steps down to 38 watts before sign-off. They'd still be able to cover the town, but the listed sign-off times are 9:30 for September, but 8:45 in October and 8:15 in November (7:15 when daylight savings time ends). So how the football coverage is going to work after the first month I couldn't say...

Don't know about the legal ramifications, but KWRD stayed on until just after the football games last year and then signed off after a brief (and I mean brief) recap of the game.

They are staying on 'til 7PM on Sunday for the First Baptist Church live broadcast as well.

I wish Phillip would spring for a basic automation setup. Even a older PC with Winamp or Zara Radio http://www.zararadio.com/index.php?centro=main.php&lang=en (a freeware automation system) and Mp3's would work for fill-ins and breaks.

When I worked at the old KGRI-KWRD on the hill back in 95, owner Chipper Dean told me it wasn't worth running KWRD at night. He felt 83 watts barely covered the town and he also had the FM then. But I remember about 5-6 years ago I picked up KWRD broadcasting high school football at night, and it was coming in fairly well here in Kilgore with a little drift. So that 83 watts can skip fairly well.
