KFTY news going off the air

Just heard a report that KFTY's (Santa Rosa) newscast is going off the air because of corporations controlling the public. Another big blow to localized news coverage in the North Bay area. What do you think about it? I know in the South Bay KICU stopped having newscasts sometime in the mid-90's. Is this similar to it?

I didn't realize until now that "Cheap Channel" owned KFTY. Yes - that would certainly explain the cuts. In San Francisco, we have just recently started to get KFTY from ComCast cable. Though I have little interest in Sonoma County news, I did watch their news for awhile, and was heartened to see a small local station providing an important public service. I don't know the history of KFTY, but I can probably assume that the local news dates back to a previous decade before CC, when the station had local owners. It's a shame...

In yesterday's Chronicle article on KFTY it stated they bought camcorers and have citizens shoot news, a la KRON4. YUCK!

The reason KICU scrapped their news was because KPIX and KRON (back when the were NBC) had an "early prime" schedule. Meaning prime time started at 7pm and was over at 10pm and then the news. Channel 36 couldn't have survived agaisnt 2, 4, and 5.

I would watch KFTY (50) at my home in San Jose via over the air(skip) it was a treat to watch Rod Sherry on the weekends at TV 50, I remember watching him and Jim Anderson do weekends when I was a kid on KPIX back in the day (late 60's). It's sad that an area like the Redwood Empire would loose a locally produced newscast. Thanks to Clear Channel and the relaxing of FCC rules (In part due to the Reagon years) both TV and radio will never be the same.

Being of a liberal political persuasion, I'm normally happy to blame Reagan and both Bushes for everything that's wrong in the world, but unless my memory is failing me - the MAJOR deregulation of media ownership rules was done by the FCC (with presidential approval) during the Clinton Administration. It's possible that the rules were first relaxed a little during the Reagan years, but the big damage was done in the early 90s. It's like blaming the Republicans for NAFTA - the Republicans may have pushed for it first, but Clinton was also a big proponent.

I stand corrected. I was right deregulation started with Reagan and then FCC chairman Mark Fowler (and I guess congress). In 1985 they had lifted the restrictions on how much advertising could be carried. 1987 saw the elimination of the fairness doctrine. I have to admit you are also right then came the telecommunications act of 1996. I'll just let ClearChannel take the blame game.(lol)

"I'll just let ClearChannel take the blame game.(lol)"

It's agreed, then. The Republicans and Clear Channel should take the blame for everything that's wrong.

I'm switching from Dishnetwork to Comcast Thursday because of pixelation. Plus $10 off my Internet bill.
