KFWB blew it!

Instead of becoming a third tier englsh talker, featuring a has been "Dr". Laura as their headliner, they should have become the FIRST hispanic news/talker in LA.
I think they blew it.

Re: KFWB blew it! NOT

"Has been" Dr. Laura "has been" #1 Women 25-54 in her time slot....Hannity...not gonna happen.

Maybe it's time Leykis comes back and does political again?

Perhaps that is why Conway (and Steckler?) are getting a good long review this week - to put them on 12-3?

And the original poster is obviously someone who is a Dr. Laura hater instead of someone who understands talk radio ratings. Dr. Laura gets huge ratings. This is actually a huge step up for KFWB from what they have been for the last year, which has been nothing short of an on-air disaster.

How did 64/KFI lose Dr. Laura? She is supposed to have good numbers
in 25-54 women.

KFI's signal strength alone is a big plus. Remember all the gripes on this
board from some outlying parts of the El Lay metro about KFWB's signal
when they carried the Dodgers?

Uhh...LA already has Spanish news/talkers. KTNQ, XEKAM (comes in pretty clear in LA), W Radio 690
I'm sure they'll do pretty good with a talk format, remember, Dr. Laura has a loyal following...

Only KTNQ has a signal strong enough to get numbers. The Tijuana stations are strong enough only for radio geeks in this day and age.

The first Spanish language talker was the 830 facility in Orange, which failed and had to be sold, in the early 90's.

The second was KTNQ, which achived very significant ratings, even tying KFI in 25-54. All programming was local, as there is no usable syndicated material in Spanish.

The third was KWKW, which copied much of the KTNQ formula. It ended up doing all sports and infomercials.

The fourth was KHJ, which did all news against KTNQ. It never got above about a 0.6 share.

And then the fifth was KBLA, as an affiliate of Radio Unica, the national net out of Miami that tried, and failed horribly and expensively, to do national talk.

The sixth was also on 830, with RadioVisa, another effort to do national talk. They lost a lot of money for some investors, and never got beyond the 1 share range.

In the meantime, KTNQ which had been in the 2.5 to 3.0 range 12+ and above a 3 in 25-54, was fragmented by this group of pretenders to the throne. The expenses of doing a full local live talk format were so high that KTNQ gave up at the end of 2001 and went to a simulcast with KRCD for several years.

KHJ lasted less than two years with news in AM and PM drive, talk in middays and nights, and KWKW as mentioned moved to all sports and paid programming. Radio Visa and Radio Unica went bankrupt.

The seventh one is more recent: W Radio 690, with studios in Burbank. It uses a lot of syndicated stuff out of Mexico, and has, for nearly 3 years, never gotten much over a 0.3 share.

So, out of seven tries, only one station got decent ratings. But the costs were so high, it was not profitable.

Talk in Spanish is not an option for CBS, anyway. The format is so culturally sensitive that it would be very hard to do without background and experience, and, today, AM has fallen so out of favor by Hispanics that getting the kind of share seen nearly 15 years ago by KTNQ would be nearly impossible.

As mentioned below, only KTNQ comes close to having a decent day and night signal. 690 did serve LA 40 years ago when noise levels were lower, but is useless now. XEKAM, in the 70's, as XEGM, was KLVE's sister station and got some numbers, but, again, before computers, CFLs and all kinds of other noisy devices that make getting listening in the LA metro impossible.

KWKW is also talk, although of a sports variety. The signal is surprisingly good, particularly with repeater KWKU on 1220 in Pomona, but sports is not a significant Spanish langauge format.

I had thought the same thing about Conway (& Steckler) from reading the other thread devoted to them re: their filling in for John & Ken this week. However, according to LARadio.com, 12 Noon-2PM daily will be filled on KFI with a second Bill Handel show in addition to his morning show.

So, let me get this straight:

KFWB drops all news for news talk....and steals dr, Laura from KFI...

KFI responds with two MORE hours of Bill Handel?

Glenn Beck, THE most talked about peronsality in media today remains mired at KGIL, while KFWB picks up Laura Ingraham's screech-a-thon?

Who's running radio in this town???

My guess is that they were anxious to have her leave so they could up the energy level from "now go and do the right thing..."

Yeah, why put the highest rated personality in LA on for a different audience later in the day? That mystifies me, too.

Ms. Bertolucci gets it.

I've always been told to "Always leave them laughing!" and "Always leave them wanting more!" Two more hours of Bill Handel would not "leave them wanting more" but might surely "Leave them laughing" at the other stations when the ratings book comes out. Why burn out Bill's audience? Which is surely what's going to happen, not to mention burning out Bill Handel also. Bad Idea! Bring back Tom Leykis their already paying him already let him work for his bread.

What I meant is that KFI or CCLA has not been able to develop a strong personality that could move into a quickly vacated spot. No one is doubting Handel's abilities or ratings. But there is such a thing as spreading something to thin.

And why can't CCLA, who owns Mr. Beck's services, acquire Beck from the much lower rated KGIL. For years, though I don't share his views, it infuriates me that someone as talented...and right now as hot...as Glenn Beck is wasted on a station that barely get out of Universal City (not to mention Beck's Las tour of duty, where he barely got out of Anaheim),

KFI's TSL, which is the highest of a major station in the market, is just under 5 hours... or about 45 to 50 minutes a day. Few people listen enough to burn out, and putting him on in another daypart may get an entirely different audience.

I think the changes at KFWB will certainly be good for CBS. Right now, no one really knows what they're doing. They say they're focusing on "Entertainment industry news" but is there really a need for that on the radio? The station isn't exactly doing pop culture like E! TV does but they're not exactly doing hard news like KFI. News/talk seems like a very solid format compared to what's on the air now.

One more reason putting Handel in midday makes sense: they just traded hours of syndication...with limited ability to sell local advertising...for a show that has no network advertising obligations, and plenty of endorsement opportunities, and can focus on local issues and topics. Even if the ratings only match what Dr. Laura is getting, they'll probably more than double the revenue.
