KFYI/Fox 10 partnership

Not sure what exactly this will lead to, but KFYI announced a partnership with Fox 10 for news a week or so ago.

What will this mean to John Hook's fill-ins on KTAR? If they put the kabosh on that, he'd do a better job than Terry Gilberg's "TNT" on 550 Sundays.

Just a guess, but I would bet that Fox 10 might put a remote camera in the studio to do some cross-talk between radio and TV talent during certain time periods.

What's more likely is that KFYI would be able to use some Fox 10 news soundbites and increase the reach of the radio newsroom. I would also guess that some cross-promotion (such as giving John Hook some fill-in work, etc.) would take place.

This is not particularly new. When I was at KFYI, we had a deal with channel 10 to use some of their news soundbites. Later, we had the same deal with KTVK. Channel 5 was KFYI's partner a few years ago.

KTAR used to have a deal with Channel 12 (and before that informal partnership, KTAR was actually owned by the same company that owned Channel 12 - Combined Communications Corporation.)

*** Useless trivia: Channel 12 was KTAR TV; 620 was and is KTAR, and 98.7 was once KTAR-FM.

---and as I recall KTAR-FM played classical mono tapes from, I think what became Westwood. Mid to late 60s -- anyone have similar recolations?

Ditto on the reliance on memory, but 98.7 KTAR-FM in the late 60's had a time of milder type rock and roll.

KTAR 620 during that transistion, also had the great Lucky Lawrence on mornings with your boy Al McCoy following. This was right after KRUX was also going through some very significant changes. KTAR 620 played adult rock with personality style radio. Anybody else remember any other 620 or 98.7 KTAR call letter hosts (hostesses) ?

I'm a classical music buff, and I don't ever remember listening to KTAR-FM . I do remember listening to KRFM on Sundays for classical music. KHEP was on AM, then went to 101.1 FM with 100000 watts. They had pretty good music, except when they were playing basketball games (acting as a network host for distant AM stations.) Also, they had some preacher who came on at 10 every night. McGee or something.

> I have a Phoenix Magazine that was a 35th Anniv issue (Dec 2001)-It included an article with TV/Radio ads from the past 35 yrs. Included was an ad for KTAR-FM from 1969...it was then a "milder" top-40 format.

That would be "Through the Bible with J. Vernon McGee." Pretty basic Bible study focusing solely on Scripture. No hucksterism, no hype, no weird wife with weird hair.

Of course, this was when there was a KHEP-AM (1280) that was full-time preacher tapes and some Gospel music.

You are Right! Thanks for jogging my memory. I had a friend who probably hadn't been to church in 40 years who listened to McGee, sort of regularly. He would respond "the guy isn't bad, and it doesn't hurt to refresh your memory." Come to think of it, he was pretty down to earth....no rant'n and raving.

In the same Phoenix Magazine is an ad
for KT'R 620 touting the jocks.

In addition to the aforementioned
Bill Heywood (AMD) and Lucky Lawrence
(then doing PMD)--Bob Capps middays
and Dave Fisher evenings. But no
mention of who or what was on 6-8pm,
or overnights.

IIRC from other sources, Bob Capps had
previously done overnights on 55/KOY
for a long stretch.

In the early 1970s--prior to their flip
to news and with it a primary affiliation
with ABC/I--KT'R was still with NBC Radio
and "spared no expense" in bringing in
the network feed on a 3.5 kHz line.
Same for KOOL(AM) with its CBS feed.
The ABC affils were the only ones with
a 5 kHz network line.

KHEP-FM was at 101.5 FM, not 101.1 FM. They ran a pretty credible operation on both AM and FM.
______________

All the posts that follow are stuck in a time warp and never addressed the topic. The KFOXYI partnership makes sense as it capitalizes on the Fox brand and KFYI's impressive demos. An added bonus is it gives KFYI access to more local news stories without adding to the overhead. Studio cam? Nurse Jeff and I aren't sure Bruce & Jenn have the same draw as Beth & Bill!

...or cut back

... or cut back on local news, and depend on those Fox 10 reporters' actualities lifted off TV to carry the day.

They were running pre-recorded news with Melody Burkett saying it's "3 minutes after the hour" tag overnights last week. I haven't listened since, but have they eliminated the local cast from midnight-5? Never understood why they paid someone to come on after the net cast when they don't run it during the day anyway.

I always liked McGee. He passed away about 10(?) years ago, but his tapes are still in circulation being played on stations across the country.

As far as I know McGee's wife did not have weird hair!
Edited by formeraa on 12/04/05 01:52 AM.
