KFYI is celebrating its 20th birthday as a talker...any memories of previous hosts??? callers???

Remember Leykis? Jack Cole and his awful piano? Brian Donnelly? Bob Mohan and the "croquet balls"? Victoria Jones?

Remember these "famous" callers?...Gabe? Catwoman? Herkimer-the Bard of Glendale?

I remember Tom Leykis, Bob Mohan, John Dayl, Earl Baldwin, Micki Padorr, Bill Heywood, Ed Walsh, Grant Woods, Duke Sherlaw sp?, Battle of the Talk Show Hosts, blow out the phones and some of the famous callers like Gabe on 910 KFYI!

Oops, 35 years ago

Yeah, I remember Pat McMahon from 7-9p and then Earle Baldwin from 9-12p.

And the jingles on Phoenix's first all-news station, broadcasting from Christ-Town: "910 for News! KPHO!"

Brian Donnely was great, Mikey Pedorr was terrible as was Victoria Jones.

Nowadays though, the station pretty much is unlistenable, Bruce is an ignorant jerk, Barry is a pompus ass, and Liddy and Hill redefine infantile every show. Joe Crummey is a good listen though.

Loved Duke Shirlaw's craziness, RIP.

Barry needs the security blanket of the "yes" people in the studio...I think he is afraid of callers...so it is: what do you think Babinski?, and then he asks the news women what she thinks...what does he think they are going to say?.. "your full of hot air Barry" so they just humor him

Politics aside, I think Charles Goyette has a better produced show with better guests and topics. It don't think there is much show prep for KFYI.

Some hosts: Mark Williams (NO mandatory seat belt laws!), Stan Major, Dewey Hopper (YES, Dewey Hopper!), Alan Rappaport, AM Drive with Brad Messer and Charlie Van Dyke, Jamie McFerren (very nice lady), nighttime with John Giese.

Lotsa newspeople, too. Ron Kilgore, Mark Carlson, Brian Rackham, Denis Martyn, Pati Urias (now one of Napolitano's flacks), Doug St. James, Dave Hampton, Mitch Strohman, Maryann Watkins; even Charles Goyette did news in 1985-86 ...

And let's give it up to the two people who've worked at KFYI for all 20 years: Joe Adams and Mark Jeffrey.

I just wanted to say thanks, for including my dad, Philip Burl Rowley, otherwise known as, Herkimer the Bard of Glendale, whom passed away, on September 15, 2009, in your blog. My dad lived for "Blow Out the Phones", as a totally blind radio listener, and composer of limericks. It brought him such great joy, and invaluable friendships, with such characters as Cat Woman, and especially Mike M. aka: Whiskers. Dad used to smile, so purely, when he was able to get Mr. Mohan, to chuckle, upon the delivery, of one of his many Limericks. I've been having a rough time, losing my dad, and hero, and I just wanted to thank you for including him in your topic "KFYI is 20 yrs Old...any Memories", i was just surfin the net, hoping for some mention of him, or his pseudonym Herkimer. There was only one, but it means the world to me. Thanks again, from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely,

Philip Justin Rowley, Son of Herkimer

I'm sorry for your loss, Herkimer was fun to listen to. He was a highlight of BOTP, back when it was fun to listen to. He was a great wit.

Make that 24 years of non-toaster talk radio (1985) for KFWhyEye. Aside from in your face programming, 9~Ten also used reeeee- verrrrrrbbb...something you didn't hear at geezer formatted KT'R. The Nurse Czarina and I don't remember who pulled the plug on the reverb, but somehow we're thinking it was a couple of years before moving to 5~Fifty.

Sorry for the loss of your dad, Philip. He used to crack Bob up every time! He seemed like a very nice guy.

Your father cracked me up as well. Like the other Blow Out the Phones regulars, he proved that intelligent humor was not an oxymoron.

My condolences on your loss.

Thanks for your opinion, Charles.

Charles had a great show, until he started inhaling kookfarts and it became a Ron Paul conspiracy fest.

Mohan was great on KFYI, not so great on 1100. The old phleghm factory, John Dayl (RIP) was great too. Duke Shirlaw (RIP) Middle of the Damned Night show and "Loser!" drops were brilliant. Jack Cole(RIP) was good for a bit, until he became unhappy and wanted to leave. Brian Williams was good, Barry is still good. I always enjoyed Gabe calling in, crazy Mary, and the queen.

There were some klunker hosts for sure: Grant Woods, Micki Pedorr, Victoria Jones, Roberta Gale, JD Hayworth, the disaster pairing of Barry and Bill.

Sadly, all I ever hear of KFYI these days is Barry, don't care for Rush or Hannity, Coast to Coast is just plain stupid..

Wassup with these "guest" posters masquerading as board regulars? Zumahans1 (it pains me to even type it) and Legend_City. Then there's Dirtylaundre, who Ms Wacki thinks is Charles Goyette.

back to topic - remember when JD Loudmouth did sports at night? And the infamous Black Avenger?

Phillip, I am also so sorry to hear of your loss. My dad passed away when I was barely 15. I'm happy that this forum was able to provide the mention of your dad that you were seeking.

I'm not sure, but look at the dates of the messages at the beginning of this thread (including the ones from Zumahans1 and Legend_City). They are all from June 2005. If memory serves me correctly, that was when this site was still in its previous incarnation (click the link below). Those messages from the old site were kept when the site moved to its current home. I don't think Zumahans1 or Legend_City were impersonators; I'm guessing those were their respective usernames on the previous version of the site.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and the lowest form of creativity.

The Buckeye Boyz think you're on to something, JTN. This post began in 2005, when KFWhyEye celebrated their 20th anniversary. How it all of a sudden popped up out of nowhere can only be attributed to another vast right wing conspiracy. Now if only they'd fix the emoticon function, we'd have one less thing to carp about!

I'm the guilty one oh Master of the Buckeye Media Hut! By orders of CC. It was pulled at the last moments before switching from 910 to 550. I personally didn't mind a touch of reverb but I think Gary had it set to 11!

Nah, I didn't really think he was CG, Charles would choose a better username than that. And Legend is right, Goyette's show was very good in it's earlier days.
