KFYI is like M*A*S*H

The earlier thread about KFYI got me to thinking...

KFYI is a lot like MASH. If you watch the first few seasons of MASH with Trapper and Henry, etc., you see just how funny they were. Almost every episode is good for some genuine laughs. Then you have BJ and Potter come on board, and with Frank there to play the fool, the show is still pretty dang funny. Then you get to the last five or six seasons, and oh, wow, the show just wasn't the same. The laughs are few and far between. But...

It had HUGE ratings! In fact, the ratings were better in the last few seasons of MASH then they were at the beginning.

My point?

KFYI was an outstanding talk station in its prime (not its ratings prime, which is now, but its entertainment prime.) Hosts like Barry (whom I think is still great, BTW), Mohan, Ed Walsh, Tom Leykis, etc., really entertained. Heck, even Jack Cole, deranged as he was, was still a lot of fun. This era, right about 1987-90, was the peak of KFYI's entertainment greatness.

Now they are a ratings powerhouse, but back then they were sucking KTAR's fumes. As a result, they tried harder to stand out and be heard. That's not necessary anymore. They just keep cruising. Hey, I've got no problem with that, but they aren't on the cutting edge like they were 15 years ago.

People like to say it's because they tapped into conservative politics. Maybe. I think it's more of a general era of political awareness nationwide that coincides with the 24 hour cable news cycle that accounts for some of it. And the highest-rated cable shows have the biggest mouths running them. That just naturally holds true for radio as well.

What KFYI is missing is fun; the ol' "Hey, we're just crazy enough to say anything, but no one's really too angry around here" attitude. Barry still has it, and maybe Bruce, too. But really, it's all too serious now.

Just like MASH became in its final years.

Interesting comparison.

Here's how I see the cast (feel free to fill in the blanks):

Major Charles Emerson Winchester III: JD Hayworth and/or Rush Limbaugh
Radar O'Reilly: ???
Klinger: Bruce Jacobs
Sherman Potter: ???
Major Houlihan: Kim Komando
Frank Burns: ???
Hawkeye: Greg Paul
Trapper John: ???
BJ Hunnicut: Joe Adams
Father Mulcahy: Sean Hannity
Jonathan S. Tuttle: Dr. Akbar & Nurse Jeff ;D
Henry Blake: ???

Mickey Pedor - Hotlips, or worse yet Victoria what's her name, the pompous brit. Kim has a personality!

And Duke is absolutely Klinger, no one crazier!

Frank Burns would be Leykis, hated by all.

Scott Connor plays the guy who got blown up on his first day at war.

I'd have Jon Dayl as Potter. Mohan as Henry Blake.

Here is what I'll go with -

Major Charles Emerson Winchester III: JD Hayworth
Radar O'Reilly: (sorry I have to vote myself in here..the midwestern boy)
Klinger: Duke Shirlaw (It actually fits)
Sherman Potter: John Dayl
Major Houlihan: Mickey
Frank Burns: Tom Leykis
Hawkeye: Forrest Spencer (a scheme to every situation)
Trapper John: Sam the Butcher (always a glass in his hands)
BJ Hunnicut: Dr. Sinclair Noe
Father Mulcahy: Sean Hannity
Jonathan S. Tuttle: Charles Goyette
Henry Blake: Berry Young

Mind you some of these were not on the air - if you knew them they fit.

I love the BJ Honeycutt and Hawkeye reference! It couldn't be more true. The reference is a bit dated though; Forrest has been gone from Phoenix for over 10 years.

It fits my timeframe there as it was definately "Meatball" radio. Sorry Sam couldn't resist. :)

Funny stuff!...and in time for KFYI's 23rd birthday...we signed on 5am July 10, 1985! Had a chance to work with some of the best (and craziest) over the years! Kinda scary that I'm the only one left from that first day.

KFYI is horrible, they are like a right wing nightmare.

Terrible station, the only thing interesting is Coast to Coast and I wish that could be moved to FM.

No, Bruce Jacobs is a Spawn Hannity wannabe.

It's been a helluva cruise on both ships (9~Ten and 5~Fifty). Not only did you have all the dirt on the Beer Baron, but the assorted GM's and Chick/Dude bosses who passed through KFWhyEye's revolving doors. A tip of the fez for still being employed and avoiding the icebergs!

This would make Mr. Jeffrey (easily my favorite traffic reporter in the Valley) the M*A*S*H* version of the unseen, always heard, omnipresent Giant Voice characters played by Sal Viscuso and Todd Susman.

I think I would refer to Mark Jeffrey as the Hawkeye of traffic department at KFYI, and Ed Hammers as the Trapper John of the traffic department. They are no doubt the best traffic team in the valley! M*A*S*H - K*F*Y*I
