KFYI is now on FM

.... O.K. HD2, but still...

I noticed this morning their legal ID had changed to "KFYI Phoenix / KNIX HD2 Phoenix." Of course, about six people listen to HD radio, and most of them are broadcast engineers, so this is not a big deal. But since we all like to read tea leaves here, I will postulate that maybe, just maybe, the suits at CC Phoenix are finally taking notice that KTAR is not fading away and is, in fact, beating KFYI in many dayparts in the money demos. All the while KNIX has become an also-ran. The legal ID may one day become "102-550 KFYI Phoenix, KFYI FM Phoenix." And then, maybe one day XTRA Sports moves down to 550 where they can try to pick off one of KTAR's sports franchises such as the Cards or ASU. (The D-backs and Suns would probably never leave KTAR).

Just sayin'... I have no news or real information outside of the crack in the door where KFYI finally gets on some form of FM.

Now we'll know just how great Joe Adams sounds on FM...

Could happen. But would it be on 102.5? My bet is either 95.5 or 96.9.

They already tried that in 1999. I expect XTRA to also be on an HD2 channel, either on 95.5 or 96.9 (whichever one does not become KFYI-FM), within a year or so. I can also see KTAR's sports programming on 92.3 HD2.

That is, of course, if HD ever takes off on FM (it's on its last legs on AM).

Believe it or not, there are some people who think a Miata is a real sports car! Putting KFWhyEye on KNIX-HD2 is a joke as well, but it does give KNIX hourly exposure on the most listened to station in the Valley. It's a shame the CCU suits screwed up the brand the Owens spent so many years building. Nurse Jeff and I continue to feel 95~Five is the most logical CCU frequency for KFWhyEye. Return XTRA to 5-Fifty; upgrade KayOhWhy to 9~Ten; and sell 12~Thirty.

Why replace 95.5 with Squawk Radio? Don't we have too many blubbering windbags in Phoenix already?

Not on FM...and that's why the CCU suits should have put KFWhyEye there several years ago when the Nurse and I first suggested it. Of all the CC FM stations, KYOT has the most to lose with the coming new survey methodology (PPM). In the past six months a number of Smooth Jazz stations switched to more foreground formats that do better in the PPM world. What makes it difficult for CC is the great profit this low overheard station generates for a company that needs the dough. But KFWhyEye can generate a heck of a lot more revenue by moving to FM, and the longer they remain on Ancient Modulation the more they have to lose while battling TMISU. Smooth Jazz is what should be on HD-2 and Blubbering Windbags on 95~Five!

But, but, but.....if you put Smoooooth Jazz on HD there will be an audience of only two (the broadcast engineer and another guy whose wife threw him out for spending too much time in his radio shack). I'm assuming 95.5 does much better than that today (if only because I listen occasionally).

Isn't throwing something on HD akin to flushing it?

BTW, is "KNIX-FM HD2 Phoenix" a legal ID? I thought nothing was supposed to be between the call letters and the COL. Or is it different for the HD2 feeds since they ID legally on the main 102.5 signal?

I have to agree with landtuna, KYOT is all we're allowed to listen to at work, I don't want to lose it.

...but imagine how much more irritating JD Windbag would be on FM

The Nurse and I hereby move that the title of this subject be changed to "KFWhyEye Is Now On Fake FM". Anyone care to second the motion?

I second that emotion. (Thanks, Smokey*.)

*: Robinson or Rivers. ;)

Cheap Channel has an application for the iPhone that allows users to listen to various CC stations around the country. Interestingly enough, none of the Phoenix stations are available on that iPhone application.

CBS, on the other hand, has a similar application all CBS stations and several AOL internet stations are available using this application.

I wonder why Cheap Channel doesn't have any Phoenix stations available to iPhone users?
