KFYI Stunner

Arizona's conservative radio station pulled a stunner and shunned President Bush. The President comes to Phoenix for his only campaign season appearance and the only station that I could find that ran his speech about immigration and terrorism live was KT'R. A stunner. Two reasons to run the speech on KFYI that I can see: 1) He's speaks to the base of KFYI and 2) You don't allow your main competitor in the current radio news war show you up. I'm putting my money on a Barry Young power play with the new pd here.

The station formerly known as KOY has all but signed off.

Talk about getting your balls back.. KTAR has a promo about this campaign season and they say some stations lean far to the left while others lean far to the right. Then the v/o dude says CUT THROUGH THE CRAP. Wow.. kinda sounded like a promo that should be on Free FM

I'm clueless? It looks like the only question bigger than Dennis Hastert's resignation date, is where was KO-FYI?

The Men in Secret Underwear allowed the use of the word "crap" on one of their stations?!?!?!?

Heard it myself this morning. One correction...the "dude" is a chick.

Stunner is right. I can't believe KFYI didn't air Bush's speech in Phoenix live. The pres was here to talk about immigration and KFYI has been beating that drum for years. The new PD must have made this call. I'm sure he's hearing about it from his news staff. Give him hell Melody! ???

::) kfyi had the audio pool for the press and they didn't air the feed themselves ::)

bushbots don't buy a lot of crap...they don't spend a lot of money... they drive around in old cars ...they have paid off mortgages etc...they are conservative with their money...so the are a bad ad demo

550 is just fine...they have a core audience that doesn't care about "crap" (pardon the pun). They want the right-wingers and don't care about listening to a "news leader." All that is needed for success is Rush and Hannity and the Nearly Talented One...

This is the attitude KT'R has to love hearing from KFYI staffers. Complacency never kept anyone at #1.

I have to disagree on the line about KFYI listeners not caring about listening to a "news leader." There's a reason they run all kinds of ads about how great their news team is (used to be). Officially, the radio news war in this city is over with the huge advantage going to KT'R. KT'R finally woke up and has put together a solid sounding news product. As far as talk is concerned, there is no war in that area yet with the huge advantage going to KFYI. I have a feeling KT'R is preparing for a battle when it comes to talk, though.

Over the last few days KT'R has been playing a commercial touting the fact that they broadcast the President's speech (and Dennis Hastert's press conference) live while all other radio shows continued with their normal program. I guess TMISU have been paying attention to this message board and getting ideas from us! ;)

Fat chance.

If Bonneville paid attention to the "KFYI Chowder Society and marching Band" nattering on this board, 620 long ago would have switched to a 24/7 "Music and The Spoken Word, Live From The The Mormon Tabernacle" format.

you know what's funny about this entire discussion???

folks in the valley (...and the country for that matter) would rather listen to Rush or Hannity, than the Prez...even if he is at the Camelback

Hastert was good for a few soundbytes...

either way, KTAR had no choice but to run the Scottsdale love fest...

a. Their programming sucks, so why not put on someone who sucks even more... Mr. President.
b. They thought about having McBland or even Doug Ramsey do play by play of the prez's visit, but the FCC would have pulled the plug.
c. When you have a staff of nearly 15, the braintrust in Utah doesn't want to see a bunch of side-bar reporters sitting around the newsroom posting idiotic replies on a message board about how well their doing in their own minds. (see trends)

However (username1,zuma...etc), KFYI definetely dropped the ball on this one. The White House calls you to cover the visit, the least you could have done was put an extra reporter on the story.

...will it make a dent in the book? um, no.
Sorry KTAR, but I'm still not impressed with Mono on FM, even if I can hear it under a bridge...wrapped in foil, surrounded by plexi-glass. Ted Simmons is still boring, Pat McMahon is still boring, Ned Foster and Heidi Fogel...something, are just plain awful.

You'd be better off bringing back Tony Snow and just run White House briefings all day!

No wonder I'm selling less on FM now!

When KFYI defenders to the death like Happy start admitting "KFYI dropped the ball" with the Pres speech that's all you need to know. KFYI is making bad decisions.

KFYI made a bad move not airing the president in phoenix. They take the president all the time giving meaningless news conferences. Then, when the guy comes to their back yard and they are the pool radio feed they don't run him. This isn't about ratings it's about news authority. They clearly appear to be surrendering to KT'R in this area.

In the meantime, KT'R sounds great on FM. They're finally showing attitude. It's exactly what we've all been saying for years that KT'R needed to do. They're news is killing KFYI and now they're showing pride and attitude.

The last major piece is the talk one. We all agree KT'R needs a stronger lineup. As said many times on this board before, KT'R appears to be aware of that and working on a change.
