KFYI thinks they are judge, jury, and executioner...

Who the hell does KFYI think they are? In this country a person first has to be charged with something, and then is entitled a fair trial. After listening to Broomhead crown himself as the person who is going to spend 3 hours convicting Buungard on the air, I have to say KFYI may have crossed a legal line. Regardless of what the person has done, for him to go on a 3 hour rant on his guilt before the man has even been charged is borderline slander. Trying a man on the air in the court of public opinion is a very dangerous thing to do. You either are so desperate because your ratings are terrible, or you are just an idiot. KFYI might want to consult with their legal department on this one. Ridiculous....

KFYI is a talk station where the hosts give opinions on things--for better or worse.
Would you want to censor what they or any other radio station can discuss? It's not
like Broomhandle (or the Nearly Bald One) is yelling fire in a crowded theater.

If you don't like the discussion, change the station or turn the radio off.

Meanwhile, Bundgaard deserves every "diss" tossed his way. (Just giving my
opinion, even though I'm not a radio talkmeister, nor do I play one on TV. ;))

I didn't hear it. I have zero respect for Bundgaard, however, if Broomhead's show honestly consisted of what you described, that itself is dumb. How much can you say on the topic? Hours filled with anger, speculation, several witness accounts against Bundgaard... You can't even show the pictures on the radio. Boring radio... Sure, Bundgaard hasn't been convicted yet, but everybody knows... So Broomhead probably felt safe taking the dive. There are other options like between 3-7, 3-7, 3-7.

I wish there was a "Like" feature on Radio-Info. I think there's a post here within this thread I might've Liked.

And who's Bungaard? I guess that Atlanta news talk station slogan was pretty accurate after all! "You miss a day, you miss a lot." Well, I've surely missed quite a few weeks, maybe even months of talk radio.

Anyway, I have no opinion since I didn't hear or even know about this. I take anything a talk radio listener has to say with a grain of salt because I've realized that many people who listen to talk radio, don't really LISTEN to talk radio (especially those who have already made up their minds that they don't like it from the get go - JUST BECAUSE it's on AM and it might be a talk radio show..(calling out a few family members & friends here)). I also take quite a bit of talk radio with a grain of salt as well. As a matter of fact, thanks to the net and social networking sites, I take EVERYTHING I see and hear with a grain of salt, and even more so when I don't hear BOTH sides of the story.

My sodium level is extremely high.

But yes, if the entire organization of KFYI is truly guilty of what they've been accused of here, then I agree that KFYI should be frowned upon a little and made to feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind.

Havva good day people.

Let me clarify my post, this isn't about the scumbag Buungard, he will face the music, it's about a host that feels it's okay to try a person on the air before he has even been charged with anything. Once he is, then let your opinions roll, but to spend hours, all lathered up like Broomhead did, again before this person has been charged, to me is irresponsible. You want to give your opinion for a segment, and move on to other topics, great, but he devoted almost his whole show to it. I was just wondering the legal line, to me, let a person be charged with something before you try him on the air. Even a scumbag.

They're a talk station that specializes in conservative politics. Scott Bumblegard is a conservative politician who holds a high position in Arizona government. By definition, anything he does is fair game, especially if a crime was committed and he was involved.

In this country a person first has to be charged with something, and then is entitled a fair trial.

Yes, in a court of law, by a jury of his peers. He will get the chance to defend himself if the Phoenix PD gets its way. But in the court of public opinion, you don't get that benefit. We, individually, are the judge, jury, and (virtual) executioner. What you, I, or Mike Broomhead say isn't legally binding and doesn't matter. What a court says, and what the voters in his district think, absolutely does matter.

After listening to Broomhead crown himself as the person who is going to spend 3 hours convicting Buungard on the air, I have to say KFYI may have crossed a legal line. No it isn't. The police report is available. His now-ex girlfriend was arrested. He wasn't only because he pulled rank, based on a clause in the Arizona constitution that has been invalidated in other states going back to the 1930s. It's not slander if facts are available. And the Phoenix Police Dept. has already recommended that charges be filed against Bumblegard.

Trying a man on the air in the court of public opinion is a very dangerous thing to do. You either are so desperate because your ratings are terrible, or you are just an idiot. KFYI might want to consult with their legal department on this one. Ridiculous....

No it isn't. It happens all the time. As long as Broomhead states that he's giving his opinion, then he's OK. I didn't listen to the show, but it sounds like he did nothing improper or uncommon.

Broomhead's biggest problem might be that Bumblegard is (at least, was) held in very high regard by people that are allied with KFYI's core audience, as well as important people (read: conservative Republicans) in the state gummint. KFYI could face some flack over this, and not by folks on a message board. I don't know if it's already happened, but I wouldn't be surprised if KFYI's general manager or upper management at Clear Channel gets a not--too-friendly phone call or visit from Gov. Sen. Pearce, probably Bumblegard's biggest supporter outside his own family.

KFYI has been moving so far to the right over the last 15 years it's a wonder they aren't driving on the sidewalk. But lately, Barry has been really pushing on Bundgaard & Pearce. Broomhead appears to be following his lead. After Young's unabashed support for Schweikert , it was (almost) refreshing to hear him attack Bundgaard.

Like it or not, the talk hosts get a lot leeway when it comes to convicting public figures.

Well that was my question, the legal boundries of a person that hasn't been charged. It seems everyone is reacting on the basis of who this person is, I am not looking at it that way, I am just looking at it from the right of a person who hasn't been charged, forget that it is this man. If it is legal to do, then so be it.
I agree KFYI has kind of turned into this elite, all knowing station, but to me, a person has some rights, I guess that's why I am not a lawyer.

:D Oh, he has "Rights" alright! So many that he was able to get out of the arrest and let his girlfriend get jailed, the big jerk. He deserves every thing he got from Broomhead. The 911 tapes from witnesses were released, that had nothing to do with KFYI and they're pretty incriminating. Politicians have been tried by public opinion since forever (Ted Kennedy and Mary Jo Kopekne, Wilbur Mills and his stripper) what KE4 said is true. As far as KFYI being elite, uh, no. Not by the traditional definition.

I will say that KTAR on-air hosts (last time I checked) are very good at dropping a brief opinion, discussing, then moving right along to the next topic. I will admit that this is one of the things I fancy about KTAR. I'm not saying that KFYI is not good, but outside of occasional Coast to Coast and Barry Young action, I don't frequent KFYI too much like I used to back in 2004-2007.

I'm a little confused by this post, given how KFYI has already been anointed the "pro-Bundgard" station (not the "anti-Bundgard" station) by the local print media based upon the Nearly Bald One's interview with him. And with all due respect, the only person at KFYI to crown himself or herself anything is...that's right, the Nearly Bald One - not Broomhead.

When this Broomhead guy gets some tenure at CC and the proverbial gravitas associated with that tenure, then I could understand your "judge, jury, and executioner" comment. You're talking about a host with as much credibility as the phone-in fill-ins Mac & Gaydos get. So, I hope you understand if I'm confused and don't share your outrage - are you equally outraged about the Nearly Bald One's brown-nosing of the guy?

Which is utterly bizarre, given Mr. Komando's outright obsession with hounding this guy out of office, out of a career, and into a body bag. I've never heard TNBO seethe with such obvious contempt and hatred for anyone -- not Obama, not Clinton, not even ol' Guvnor Ev. And, for the life of me, I can't fathom why.

You are correct indierarioguy. Barry interviewed him after Bundguaard called in and asked to be put on the air. It was NOT a friendly interview.

There were a lot of calls defending Bundguaard after the interview, so it's obvious that the audience also thought that Barry was not nice to him.

JMHO

I am sure I would be equally outraged at Young, my problem is I work during those hours and haven't heard him. I could only comment on what I heard, but I am hearing of what you speak, because I posted this, I now know it's legal, which in all honesty, I still have a problem with if a person hasn't been charged. But the emotion over Buungard seems to overshadow the point I was trying to make, I am not defending Buungard, the guy is undefendable, I was questioning our rights as citizens if you haven't been charged. But I have been told it's legal, so there you go.

Thank you for responding to my post. After reading your original post I downloaded the last 2 days of Mike Broomhead's program. (I don't usually listen to his show.)

I listened to 5 of the 6 hours that I downloaded and he only spoke about Bungaard during 1/2 hour of the 3/24 show.

Would you please tell me which day that the 3 hour rant about Bundgaard occured?

I'm taking into account that he may have talked about him during portions not included in the podcast, but that would not add up to an entire show.

Thanks,
Norman

While I agree that Bundgard is swine, Broomhead is a first class moron. I heard him making potentially libelous remarks, and then instantly licking Sheriff Joe's boots. The guy is a redneck with a pretty low IQ.

Barry on the other hand is smart, but he has a very stupid show, which is dumbed down like crazy whenever the ditzy debutante Michelle opens up her yap.

Both shows are among the reasons I don't listen much any more, I catch about 5 minutes of Barry on the way to work and a few minutes of Broom on the way home.

Its crap radio designed to get you angry, when you had no reason to be angry in the first place. Glad that the entire genre is slowly dying.

I don't like KFYI and make most efforts to avoid 550 AM when I am "in the Metropolis."
However, I do enjoy checking out several FM and a few AM stations serving Maricopa County.

Wow, really? KeithE4's post was pretty spot on, but just to add to it a bit...

It's relatively obvious that you don't understand how talk radio works. Hosts are paid to express their opinion and they continue to get paid if those opinions garner an audience which causes the station to be able to charge higher confiscatory ad rates. The key word in all of this is "opinion"---this is absolutely no different from the opinions that you probably express around the office or to your friends regarding Scott Buungard. Barry Young, Mike Broomhead and others have made it clear that this is their opinion. I fail to see how it is "irresponsible" to express one's belief.

I believe OJ Simpson is guilty of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, he wasn't found criminally guilty of this, but I still have my opinion and gladly have expressed it in the public forum. Many other hosts expressed similar opinions on that topic---no one was sued or thrown off the air. Why? Because it's opinion. No one is being damaged by the court of public opinion.

On the other hand, if Mike Broomhead said "McDonalds french fries cause cancer" without having any substantial proof of such a claim, then certainly there could be a libel suit there. In the context of this discussion, Broomhead sees what we all see, the police report, the documentation and some heresay and uses that for the basis of his opinion...kinda similar to OJ really.

No, KFYI serves to rile up it's low-info listeners by getting them agitated over distractions. "Look over there. Nothing to see here!
