KFYI - Time for a Makeover? Um YES

KFYI sure is in need of a makeover in my opinion. It sounds stale, dated, and not really relevant at least to me. I ask these questions:

Do they really need to carry Rush/Sean back to back in the midday/early afternoons? I see the importance of having the top 2 national talk shows on your station but possibly its time to shake up that line up and move one of those shows to a different time slot.

Is the Talk Fest AM Drive offering doing well agaisnt KTAR news format? Does KFYI need to compete with KTAR and have a Fresh/more Hip sounding Morning News offering? Just asking not sure if it would fly

Is it really a good thing to Brand your station with Fox News Radio? Possibly it would be better to not call out yourself as only Fox news radio but rather one up KTAR on how you deliver/report the news

Just some observations

The audiences for the two are said to have heavy overlap (being a Rush baby and hating Hannity, I don't see it personally, but that's what I'm told), so breaking them up risks shedding listeners otherwise comfortable with staying tuned to your station for six hours at a time. There's also the fact that both shows are breaking-news-sensitive, so you want to air them as close to live as possible; in so doing, they generally run back-to-back.

KFYI has tried that more than once, both with beloved morning-show legends anchoring in a semi-happytalk format and with dedicated hard-news professionals delivering pure hard news; they've always flopped miserably with the format. The audience has certain expectations of the station, that they'll hear news they'd likely not hear elsewhere filtered past various points of view along the libertarian/conservative axis; they can hear the AP/Reuters/AFP spin on things a hundred other places, and that's exactly what they've come to KFYI to escape.

The branding only refers to the TOH news, like other stations billing themselves as CBS Newsradio and the like. It tells potential listeners where to go if that's the news they want to hear just as the CBS branding does for fans of WNR. KFYI doesn't carry any of the Fox News Talkers*, though, and never has (oddly enough, though, KTAR has in the past!), so it's not like they're all that closely branded.

* -- This would refer to the Kilmeade/Gibson/Colmes/et al roster of Fox News Talk, not talkers who have shows on the big TV operation.

KFYI won't make the mistake for the third or fourth time and do a morning news block. They're expensive to produce, and KTAR does it as well as anyone, so there's no reason to duplicate them. Counter-program with talk.

They do need to go to FM.

I wonder if they miss Jacobs? He has major flaws, but he was entertaining.

KFYI is as edgy as a marshmellow. Barry is bored, he has a dullard as a sidekick, the slurry debutante.

Broomhead...oy, what a moron. He has his head up Arpaio and Babeau's posterior so much his voice is muffled. The angry white hillbilly shtick gets old.

Rush, Hannity...zzzzzzzzz Radio for old men.

Savage? They should send out crayons and coloring books with his show. 3 hours of faux anger and screaming..yee ha, that never gets old? ::)

Sharpe is still a good guy and Barry Markson is amazingly good and smart, but sadly, he is only on when Young gets too bored to even phone it in.

I love Jim Sharpe and Barry Young. Rush Limbaugh is always good (but him in Haney Project was FUN). I've never really been interested in Broomhead's show... there's just a ton of things I'd rather listen to at the time. Savage is a wacko.

KFYI needs to stop posting story links on their Facebook before the story is even written on their website. That's extremely annoying to click on a link to read the story, see the same headline atop of a website page, with no story below.
