KFYI Traffic Music

This posting makes me to be a total geek, but am I the only person who hates the new traffic intro music at KFYI? I would purposely stop listening to Stern in the mornings and sports/news in the afternoon just to get traffic from Mark, Steve, Jason, Lou, and Greg. I loved the old music. Now it hurts my ears to hear how far KFYI has its nose up Fox News butt. Any comments?

Guess I must be a geek, too, since I find the new music very annoying....actually I prefer KFYI traffic but the programming is getting a bit dull so I haven't been listening as much. Rush and Sean are okay for small bits but who needs six straight hours of nationally syndicated (and highly repetitive) radio? Barry has good and bad days. Liddy and Hill are MIA until their syndication happens and then it is only IF Laurie Cantillo sees fit to pick them up. Although I love Liddy and Hill sometimes their schtick would be a bit repetitive and I found myself straying to KXAM.

So I tune over to 55/FYI at 6:20am the other day
hoping to hear traffic as I start my commute.

The traffic sounder starts and then the clown
talkmeister (Jacobs) goes on a two-minute rant
about...sports! @#$%ing sports! Eventually
we get the traffic report. That sounder bed
must run for 5-6 minutes.

Why KFYI? I know I'll get a thorough traffic
report, subject of course to Brucie Boy shutting
up. I don't want to hear the "fake traffic"
(nor the "fake news") on one of those FM music
stations, and while I know I can tune over to
Deputy Dan on KT'R at 6:26, it's almost always
limited to the west side, and I could care less
about traffic on the west side. (Sorry, 623ers!)

Interesting points. I started listening to KFYI Eastside/Westside Traffic because they covered the entire valley with two reports and two airplanes "every ten minutes." Then they went to only one airplane, now none, and traffic "whenever Bruce and Barry decide to get to it." At least L&H would have it within a three minute window.

I think that DD Beach covers the eastside more, or maybe the drivers are worst over there and have more accidents. (Sorry, 480ers!)

Re: KFYI PHONE NUMBER

SO, AFTER 20 YEARS OR SO, KFYI GET A NEW PHONE NUMBER.

2 6 0 - K F Y I

NOT.. TWO SIX OH - K F Y I.

IT'S, TWO SIX ZERO OR TWO SIXTY - K F Y I.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH..

SIX ZERO TWO OR SIX TWO ZERO.

BOTH BARRY'S DEVOTED AN ENTIRE HOUR ON THE NEW DIGITS.

ANYWAYS,

BACK TO TECHNO TRAFFIC; EAST-SIDE, WEST-SIDE.

260 is in 602 but it works as a seven-digit
call in all three metro area codes since it's
the HVCI exchange. (Now watch all the other
phone geeks come out of the woodwork ;-)

Did Ma Bell think 55/FYI would now, after all
these years, impact regular phone service in
the (602-)258 exchange and made them change?

Will KT'R also have to give up their incumbent
gabfest number and switch to 260? Let's see,
260-KT'R is...260-587...hmmm, we need seven
digits...OK, 260-5827.

And what happens when one of those FM music
stations gives away concert tickets to the
ninth caller and indeed blows out the blowout
exchange for 15 minutes?

258 IS THE DOWNTOWN PHOENIX EXCHANGE.

FUNNY.. 260-587.

IT COULD BE 602 260 6200

NOW, IT'S NOT SIX OH TWO, TWO SIX OH, SIX TWO OH OH..

THAT WOULD BE 662 266 6266.

THOSE ARE ZEROS AND NOT O'S.

IF YOU SAY, TWO SIX OH - FIVE THREE NINE FOUR; THERE'S NOT TOO MUCH CONFUSION.

WITH LETTERS FOLLOWING THE PREFIX, THIS COULD BE CONFUSING; TWO SIX O' K F Y I.

266 - 5394 ?

THAT COULD BE A PROBLEM FOR A TALK STATION WITH LISTENERS ON HOLD FOR UP TO AN HOUR AT TIMES (THERE ARE SOME CRAZIES OUT THERE).

Phone Geek Question

Can you still call 260-6404 and get an intercept saying that the new number is 260-1047?

How many years ago did that change occur?
______________

A brief but fun history of KFYI traffic:

1985 - KFYI signs on with Mark Jeffrey doing traffic along with someone else whose name I can't recall. Mark does reports from a rickety pickup truck, and the flyboy is in a rented helicopter. This lasts about a month.

1985 - thereafter. Mark Jeffrey is employed by KFYI - KKFR to do reports from one traffic plane for both stations.

1990 or so - KFYI gets Skyview reports faxed every 15 minutes for off-drive time reports. They're read by newscasters.

Sometime in the 1990s - KFYI starts using outside vendors for traffic, but Mark Jeffrey is still on their air.

1999 - 2000? - KFYI touts eastside / westside traffic with two airplanes. This is a blatant, yet effective ripoff of the old KTAR method which KTAR abandonded years earlier. (KTAR also at one time used off-duty DPS officers to report traffic).

September 11, 2001 - We all know what happened. All civil air traffic suspended. In a few days scheduled airline service resumes, but most civilian air traffic is grounded or restricted. This includes traffic airplanes. This continues for several weeks and KFYI must use ground-based traffic reports. Realizing this is less expensive, and - with ADOT freeway cameras now prevalant - airplanes are probably no more effefctive, KFYI abandons airplane reports.

After the 'no-fly' warning was lifted for traffic airplanes, Jeffery came back on the air inside a plane. I remember because I was listening for his traffic report and he sounded like he was in an airplane and he announced that he could go airborne again. That lasted for a few weeks/months. It would make sense that it is (much!) cheaper to sit in front of a computer or TV screen and do traffic reports.

Does 26-26-151 still get the cops?

I used to call that number to report my brother pilfering my ladmo bag.
Edited by zumahans1 on 08/30/05 07:02 AM.
