Hello All

KFZO is now upgrading, they will be done in a few weeks. Any thoughts?

Another (yawn) Spanish language station. They join an over-saturated market for that type of programming. \why don't they turn on some HD and PO KLUV

Constuction is currently quite a bit of time away. It's certainly not going to be in a few weeks, fer sure.

What "type" of programming is that? The "Spanish" format?

David, you know....it's where a bunch of "those people" speak and play music on the radio that us Crackers don't understand....you know they are talking about us. I remember hearing it while visiting my mother in Texas. Lots of that "Spanish" stuff. Don't get me started on that "Polish" stuff we have in the Chicago area. Have you ever noticed how Tejano music sounds like Polka music.....especially if you've had enough beer....
Seriously, David, thanks for all the resouces on you website. Well done.

There are 39 FM signals in this market that cover more than half the market. Of those, one -- KZMP-FM 104.9 -- is aimed at people originally from India and Pakistan. 8 of those signals -- KNOR, KLNO, KBOC, KFZO, KTCY, KZZA, KDXX, and KESS-FM -- are running some sort of programming aimed at Spanish-speaking Hispanics. The other 30 signals -- KNTU, KEOM, KNON, KVRK, KERA-FM, KCBI, KDKR, KVTT, KZPS, KDBN, KSOC, KLTY, KSCS, KPMZ, KEGL, KBFB, KLUV, KPLX, KJKK, KWRD-FM, WRR, KDGE, KDMX, KESN, KVIL, KKDA-FM, KRLD-FM, KRNB, KHKS, and KMVK -- are English-language (save for some specialty programming on KNTU and KNON).

8 stations of 39 = 20.5%. I was even being generous including in marginal signaled KDXX in the Spanish-language column. If you factor in the suburban signals that don't reach half the market (KTFW/KXEZ, KHYI, KFWR, KLAK, KTDK, etc.), the percentage of "Spanish" formatted stations falls under 20%. The Hispanic population of this market is 25%.

Granted, I don't care for or listen to any of the Spanish-language stations, but that's my preference and it doesn't mean the market is "oversaturated" with "Spanish" signals. I'm sure newer Hispanic generations are more English-dominant and not interested in these formats (but I don't know what the %age is in this market; if I recall, most Hispanics in the market are still Spanish-dominant)...so there are probably the appropriate number of signals based on the population in the market.

I guess my issue is that id rather hear more ethnic language stations (asian, hindi, arabic) in this market above 92.1 on the dial, as D/FW has one of the largest populations of these folks in the country. Nothing against the polka/romantica/tejano/L-pop rock formats(thank you douglas b), but when you play the same thing over and over on each station (BTW, I do understand espanol), its not any better than the "english" stations and it gets to be a total bore.

You say you understand Spanish, but why do you think there is a tejano station in Dallas when, except for an HD2 channel, there is none?

The Spanish language stations are quite varied, in fact. There is an adult hits one, three varieties of contemporary ranging from hurban leaning to pop/romántica, and several of the different types of "regional Mexican" (a name by definition that consists of several separate formats).

In other words, just like general market radio, a spectrum where there is overlap, but lots of variety.

David, we know you like to argue...so im going to settle it as easy as possible: General market radio in this market stinks alltogether :)

I think that about covers it, so the thread can be closed ;)

Slambang, I agree with you. Its a slow viking ship funeral . Only those who spin numbers will deny this. So be it,but each year research shows radio listenership is in decline. Those are the facts, omit some if one must and deny the obvious.
