KGAN CR vs DSM

Why does KGAN consistently report Des Moines area news to its primary Cedar Rapids market? What we need is more investigative series on a variety of subjects in Cedar Rapids and less about Des Moines area road construction.

Thoughts?

You get gas at the Sinclair gas station.

You get indigestion at the Sinclair TV station. (Especially when that
Hyman guy gets on.)

Yep, here's my thought. The Des Moines viewers who watch this simulcast done from the KGAN studios feel the very same way about the preponderance of news about the CR city government issue as CR viewers feel about Des Moines traffic. It's the price you pay for convenience.

Hyman is a blowhard who likes to pontificate on his "superiority".

The Des Moines news angle is simply due to the shared newsroom and staff to support dual market reginalized, watered down tripe.

It's gone over in both markets like a lead balloon.

I realized early from inside reports that the new team arrived to form a CR and DSM shared newsroom--and now the result is something like "what, why are they broadcasting some obscure story from another market". The patter has been shallow on most stories with the occasional in-depth masterpiece. The trouble with local TV news reporting outside of this shared experience is the lack of commitment (or the go ahead from management) to dig deep--this means investigate--don't just report what offical city sources or area businesses are giving out. But because of market size and local economics many station reporters are reluctant to do so.

Let's not chalk it all up to the reporter. There are times when there is no time to dig deep. Many times reporters are stuck in the daily grind trying to turn 2 different stories and 2 different live shots. That leaves very little time to dig deep on much of anything. 3 dayside reporters are needed to turn stories for both shows.

Investigative stories score well in research as to what viewers want, but it usually takes a lot of staff to cover the one person doing investigations. If you only have 3 reporters you can't just expect the other 2 to carry you while the third one is digging and hunting. Management may see that person "just sitting around" and put them to work on a mindless story to help fill time.
