KGBC

I noticed this past week that KGBC sounds like a local station in terms of power in the Beaumont / Port Arthur area. I don't recall it being that strong previously here.

It's listenable as far north as Spring, too. They are obviously back to full, and upgraded at that, power. Hopefully, it will serve Galveston as it used to years ago. Guess we'll see how well Siga performs during the next tropical storm, hurricane, etc.

KGBC has a near-perfect tower location ... at the far east end of Galveston Island surrounded by salt water. It blasts into Baytown, nearly 40 miles north, with a local signal because of the all-water path across the bay.
Even across land, it puts a nice signal out toward Sugar Land and west Houston, a nod to the excellent ground conductivity in this part of the country.
I too really enjoy what they're doing down there, and agree that our next big storm will be a test.

Right up your alley, Papillionwyngs. Classic Hits or "Oldies" as we like to call it. You'll find it at 1540 on your AM dial.

I wouldn't exactly call its format oldies - I've heard a range of 50's to 80's on it - and quite a few clunkers that should have been allowed to die in obscurity. Still, it is stronger in Cypress than it used to be, but there is a lot of sloppy power line interference on the feeder of 290 between Spring Cypress and Cypress Rosehill, I don't know if it is something Walmart is doing wrong, or what. But it make 1540 completely unlistenable, along with all but the strongest local AMs.

KGBC format is a bit of a train wreck - I really wish they would specialize in 50's / 60's, or 60's / 70's or 70's /80's 40 years is waaaaaayyyyy to broad for an oldies format.

Had a chance to listen to them this weekend while in Galveston. Much stronger signal around East Houston. Their music is all over the road, like they are playing the Program Director's personal favorite songs. Not consistent enough and wish they had stuck to a true oldies 60, 70's and maybe early 80's format. I hear too many obscure album cuts. They could score some points by having a good true Oldies list.

However, I give a big kudos and thumbs up for the station really trying to sound local and community involved! Plus, sounds like they have some advertsers on the air.

I like KGBC. Its a great departure from the sad state of radio. I love the variety. I dont want to hear all the same songs 50 times a day the all the other oldies, classic hit stations are already beating into the ground repeatedly. I like how this station suprises me with everything they play. This is good radio.

In my apartment in Seabrook it totally destroys KGOW's signal as well as from Texas City to Galveston in the truck. You can hear John Granato with Daydream Believer in the background.

Hearing 1540 slop under 1560 happens as far north as Texas City driving in on 45. KGBC really clobbers The Game in Galveston itself.

if KGBC is stepping all over 1560 up 290 somethings up! the Wal-mart @ cypressrosehill is less then 2 miles from the 1560 tx!!
It sounds like KGBC pattern is way out

Huh?
1560's tower is way south of town, near Rosharon. And I don't think anyone said 1540 was stepping on 1560 way up in Cypress. That interference, according to a poster, is in Seabrook, and Seabrook is nowhere near Cypress.

my bad, what I ment was, what is being herd up that way is 1520 KYND.
when you have 1520,1540 and 1560 in such prox...
Akso KGBC was upgraded a few yeas back to 5KW day with most of it pointing right up the cost.

An upgrade to 5KW does indeed cost more.

They're currently licensed for 2.5kw D, 250 watts at night. They have several applications to move to Dayton, with 5 kw day power, but it looks like none of the apps have been granted yet.

Three cheers for the variety on KGBC. Like Mr. Carter, I'm sick of formats that only have a 20-song playlist; regardless of what years you're looking at. And, as for playing the PD's faves; more power to him if he can garner an audience with his favorites. That just shows you how hungry listeners are for the good old days of radio when everything got played (even if there wasn't a $20.00 bill in the record shuck, when it came in from the promoter).

So they're priding themselves on serving Galveston, but have apps to move to Dayton? Well I just lost some respect for them.

Send some of that signal out West - they were really weak in Sugarland when I was down there today. I expected a lot more signal that much closer to Galveston.
