KGBT 1530 = Wasted signal

I was looking at the Spring '11 numbers for McAllen-Brownsville and noticed KGBT-AM sitting at 0.7. That is pretty pathetic for a 50,000 watt AM with the best coverage in the market.
Little KIRT-- a 1kw AM at one end of the market beat them!
Univision needs to give up on Spanish news/talk.
It's Texas talkers are fading away with the format.

I've haven't seen the ratings for the rest of the age groups, but I'm assuming it does better there. If it were up to me, a Conjunto station would probably do really good in the valley.

Since we are talking Valley radio, KKPS is going through changes. This is the second time in a month they have re-imaged their logo. It now has adopted the usual "Tri Color" logo that is being used in other Entravision Reg. Mexican stations and has also changed their lineup. This is getting interesting. It is now playing nothing but Norteno. I guess ratings were unacceptable through the charts.

I hear Tejano stations are suffering in the younger demos in general because there just aren't young Tejano acts to excite listeners. KXTN in SA survives on its personalities and promotion. But it's more a Tejano classic hits station now.

In response to the changes at KKPS, BMP switched KBUC 102.1 from the "Real Country" satellite service to Tejano this afternoon at 5 p.m., as "Super Tejano". Sounds like it's more of a Tejano classic hits station, like fredcantu noted about KXTN.

KGBT-AM did just change its morning show, to a simulcast of the Jonny Ramirez show out of KXTN. From posts I've read online, it sounds like Jonny spent most of his first show on KGBT-AM ripping on the Valley - probably not a great call.

I remember in the 70s-- KGBT-AM's playlist included Tejano, Regional, Conjunto and even Spanish pop. I wonder if that kind of variety would work today as a Spanish Classic Hits station?

Depending on the formula and market, variety does work on Classic Hits or Adult Hits station in Spanish (just like JACK-FM does in different markets).

The JUAN format plays Norteñas, Mariachi, Grupo, Cumbias and Classic Pop. Depending on what region you are, you can have a different formula of songs in the mix.

Tejano (today) is more like a Classic Hits format. The format can play some 70's, 80's and 90's (which is the nucleus of the format). There are some new songs in Tejano, but not enough to push a heavy rotation. That is why KXTN does so well (with it's formula) and now Super Tejano 102.1 has had a great reaction to the approach of the "Classics".
