KGO caller compared NFL replacement refs to KGO replacement talk show hosts

Around 9:40 AM on Tuesday, Ronn was talking about the Green Bay/Seattle game and a caller in an attempt to show how bad the replacement refs are said "it would be like someone buying a talk radio station and hiring a bunch of replacement hosts."
That was so cool!!! Ronn didn't even have the guts to acknowledge the fantastic point that was made. He only said that his point was "going in a different direction". It was, but Ronn should have said "touche" or something intelligent.

Ronn, like the rest of us, is probably tired of hearing people rant about the changes at KGO. It's over and done with. It happened nearly a year ago. Life moves on.

Ronn also seems to be concerned with not rocking the boat with Cumulus. In the "General Radio Industry News" (home page) today, Ronn denies Rich Lieberman's contention that Cumulus is going to buy out his contract before it ends on December 31st. He also states that he has no idea what will happen after that, and that the Cumulus people have been very nice to him.

I have to wonder - why wait this long, then buy Ronn's contract out with only 3 months left in the year?

Despite the other comments made, I think that's awesome and would've loved to hear it. :)

Because it's more garbage spouted by Wrong-Way Lieberman. Why do people read his stuff and accept it as truth?

Thank you.
It's on the kgo archives if you want to download or listen. Just go to Tuesday and click on 9-10 am. If you download it, you can fast foward to the 38 minute mark to hear the entire call without having to listen to everything else.

The only reason, Llew (and I'm not saying this is what's happening) is that 3 months' worth of the contract is the most Cumulus is willing to pay out and not have Ronn earn the money by doing a show. But it's probably only worth doing that instead of letting him work all the way to the end if:

1) You have something you want in that timeslot ASAP and you're willing to pay for both.

2) You want to avoid the big build-up to "Ronn's last day" and the attendant publicity. You will get whacked for unceremoniously dumping him, but it'll be a one or two-day story, as opposed to maybe two or three weeks worth of attention focused on "KGO's last legend is leaving".

No, all you have to do is take him off the air for the final 3 months. You don't have to negotiate anything.

I didn't say "negotiate" anywhere in there, David. And taking him off the air but continuing to pay him is essentially the same as a buyout. He's not on your air, and you're paying him through the remainder of the deal.

A "buyout" means paying a lump sum to someone, usually at a discount. To make it worth it to Cumulus a buyout isn't worth doing the legal work at this stage of the game. Sure, last December it would have been, but it seems that Cumulus wanted to keep Owens.

Merriam-Webster's 2nd definition fits this situation: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/buyout
