KGO is now HD during select hours

I've noticed for a couple of weeks now that KGO is using the HD transmission system. But only between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
I'm guessing, but I suspect it is the same reason that KCBS dropped HD last year. The problem? News reporters in the field, as well as traffic reporters (car and sky) needing to monitor the station for an IFB. The delay that HD induces makes it impossible to report live while monitoring the on-air for your cues.
So the regular hosts (Ron Owens and the others during the day) are in HD, and the rest isn't. At least the HD is not causing KGO to reduce to 5 khz on the analog. It appears to be 8khz to my ears.

Maybe this is the real reason they dropped the noon news?

No, that's not the reason. Poor ratings and the option of getting Tillem on, That would be the reason. HD? we all hope it goes away. It was a corporate mandate
that we do it. I think FM may benefit long term, with extra channels to fill with music and eventull commercials, but AM? I'm not sure anyone cares...Least of all the AM broadcasters.

Oh Wait, IBiquity Cares!

I think that Ibiquiy only cares about paying down the debt to its investors.

Well, HD does not seem to affect the sound quality of analog KGO very much, so it does not matter, I suppose. It is kind of a wierd thing to be listening to the 4:00 PM network news and have 8 seconds of the newscast dissappear when they turn off the HD.
