Seems the original topic was on the Talk Shows on KGO, and I miss some of the shows now, though I live in the Sacramento area. I miss Ray.
As for signals, I remember going off at shortly after midnight in the first station I worked at, and a First Phone was needed at that time, as I was the only one at the station (mornings and night shifts). I was the station engineer in my later years there, and we went from an AM 5 KW station days, to 1 KW at night and directional as well, with three towers transmitting the signal.
I left the station the year we were going to re-paint the three towers (each 300 feet high), and it was going to be one of my jobs, along with another engineer. Kind of glad I left when I did. Not afraid of heights, but just a lot of sloppy work, and not an easy job either.
