KGOL 1180's nighttime application...

...actually got approval from the FCC. This authorizes them to increase their power from 1kW to 3kW, which frankly isn't much, but here's the really shocking part in case you hadn't heard about it. The application that got approved is essentially the same one that got instated back in '05, having first been filed in 1987. That's not a misprint.

Originally KGOL had filed for higher power, coupled with a change for a dual-city license from Humble to Humble-South Houston. The dual-COL plan was dropped and the planned power level went from 5kW to 4.7 and now down to 3, but the fact that it was actually approved after all these years is pretty amazing. Here's a look at their proposed coverage, specifically what's supposed to be nighttime interference-free coverage of Humble; note the pronounced null toward an unbuilt station in Nuevo Laredo and, of course, a continuation of the protection toward Class A station WHAM Rochester NY: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getattachment_exh.cgi?exhibit_id=308799

Do you think they will build this? Seems like a lot of money to build for very little impact (and at night).

Also, why does Entravision hold on to this station?

Yes, but I agree with your assessment. When I posted this I had a feeling that KGOW's nighttime application would also be approved soon afterward, which is exactly what happened. But unlike this one 1560 is getting a real upgrade over their current facilities.

I don't know, unless they think the upgrade will add to the stick value and they could unload it at a decent price someday. That's probably wishful thinking, though. They have three years to get it done but I doubt the economy will make a stunning turnaround by then.
