KGO's talk format now

I may have mentioned this before but I noticed that what the little talk KGO now does there seems to be a long amount of time spent in "explaining" the subject matter up for discussion.
This being done by the shows host.
It almost seems that the phones are not ringing and the talk show host is stalling for time ?

In the past KGO would bring up a subject matter and talk maybe 5 or 10 mins about it then start taking calls, now I've heard some talk show host talk almost for a half hour before they take calls.

I'd say that two things are at work: research that shows that listeners prefer to hear the host, not the callers. (I'm in that group myself.) And 1/4-hour PPM counts. Notice that Gil Gross changes topics every 15 minutes on KKSF 910, and doesn't allow too many calls in. It's all planned this way.

Much as people like to trash KGO, I seriously doubt they have a lack of callers.

The beginning of every decent talk show hour should be 'setting the table.' The host takes the time to set up the topic or topics for that hour. If one doesn't get good calls, he/she will switch to another topic mentioned. There is no lack of calls hitting the talk lines at KGO. As for Gil's show, having been in the control room there as well, generally all the lines are flashing with people on hold...as David said, he just doesn't do as caller-based a show as some. There have been hosts in the past that take a huge volume of callers...by that I mean one about every 45 seconds to a minute. That hasn't been proved to be terribly great at getting and holding audience.

gene Burns was know for the LongCall as well. probably depends on the time of day, 7pm to 5 am take the long call, other times keep things moving.

Some hosts give the screen-er a list of topics that they have researched and then tell them to take calls on those topics, so "open lines" is faked many times.

Most of the other Cumulus stations do this as well.

I wonder if Cumulus wants its stations to eventually become all-news stations? I can count lots of their radio stations (WMAL, WJR, WLS, KLIF, KABC, KGO) that air traffic reports every ten minutes (on the fives, except for KABC). Most of their radio stations, excluding WJR and WMAL, have fallen into their own grave due to constant commercial breaks, as well as the traffic reports.

Personally, I enjoy hearing the callers because it keeps me informed with other people's opinions.

When will Ronn be back on the air??? I have heard fill-in hosts when I've listened to the KGO podcasts online. Hope that he will recover enough to be back on the air sometime soon.

Maybe Monday, maybe never.
