The definition of Classic Rock varies. Some industry insiders believe that Classic Rock includes rock hits that have "stood the test of time." In other words, rock songs that are at least 10 years old and still have some currency.

Does anyone remember the Gater in the 90s, when they played "Instant Classics"? Blind Melon's "No Rain" was one of those songs.

If you hear newer cuts on the Gater, they're not played that often. They also choose to play those at night.

I really like the BONE in Tampa for classic rock. lots of 90s rock with Freebird and Stairway to Heaven mixed in.

No the station was the best when they played "Gourmet Rock" Guns and Roses, Def Leppard and then Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and others.... A Mix and MAtch of Progressive Rock. New music by classisc artists.... :)

Hey Guys:

Speaking of KGR and it's "rock" format. Would anybody know what date 98.7 went from Gourmet Rock "98.7 KGR" to Mainstream AOR as "98.7 K-ROCK"? I have come down to this in my research.

In July of 1988 WKGR was Gourmet Rock and in Feb of 1989 it was K-ROCK. Any thoughts?

OH almost forgot anybody notice that BIG AND GATER have the same overnight show?? When did that start?
Thanks for the help.

In your research pursuits, you may be aware the call letters WKGR once were assigned to what is now WAJD-AM 1390 Gainesville, Florida. Prior to 98.7 becoming WKGR, it was AOR formatted WIZD known as "99 IZD". Prior to WIZD, it was, if I am not mistaken, WLQY.

I think you might be. WKGR began life, IIRC, as WARN-FM, sister to 1330 in Ft. Pierce.

Yes, you are correct that that 98.7 was the FM sister station to 1330 Fort Pierce. I'm not sure of the exact dates, but I'm fairly certain it was WLQY for a short period. I'll research it to verify. I do know the call letters WLQY were on an FM station before going to 1320 Hollywood. Before that, the WLQY call letters were on 100.7 (now WHYI). I believe WHYI (Y 100) was originally called, or was going to be called, Lucky 100.

Although there are no dates given, the WLQY call letters were assigned to 98.7 at one time according to FCCInfo.com. The link is provided below:

http://www.fccinfo.com/CMDProFacLookup.php?calls=WLQY&tabSearchType=Historic+Call+Search

Here's the bird's eye lowdown From Broadcasting Yearbook, with the years for the call changes approximate due to the book's annual publishing deadlines.

Christmas Eve, 1952: WARN 1330 signs on.
May Day, 1961: It's joined by WARN-FM.

They remain WARN AM&FM until about 1976. 1330 becomes WFTP (later WDKC and WJNX). WARN-FM becomes WLQY.

WLQY 1976 - 1981. WIZD 1981 - 1985 (it only seemed longer!). WKGR 1985 to present.

I'm surprised it was "Lucky" longer than it was "Wizard," and now the "Gater" (sic) has outlasted the original calls. But at first, KGR was called "Gourmet Rock," which was not something we were hungry for. Let that be a warning to you, or something.
