KGUN 9 On Your Side at 9PM on the CW Tucson

I just happened to flip to KWBA one night and noticed that the KGUN9 newscast at 9PM WASN'T a repeat of the 6PM news. I usually watch KMSB/Fox 11, but the technical gaffs on their news night after night and the overall amateurish appearance have started to turn me off from watching.

I noticed on the KGUN 9PM newscast that it's basically a compilation of repackaged reports from the 6PM news and teases to stories coming up at 10PM. Great if you don't make it in time to watch the news at 6PM. Tonight, it was all local stories up until 9:15 (a plus in my book!) with reports from MaryAnn Martinez, Linda Garrett, Joel Waldman, Tammy Vo, Craig Smith, and Ian Reitz. (I'm probably forgetting someone). There was also more banter between Guy and Erin than usual. Didn't notice any sports though, but that's ok.

My question: how long has the 9PM news on KWBA been live (or rather, not been a repeat of 6PM)?

I may have found my new source for local news at 9PM. ;D

I wondered about the same thing recently when Atchley introduced a story by a reporter, they cut to the reporter's story which was "X is happening in the city of Tucson, tune in to KGUN 9 news at ten to hear my report" which was the one of the oddest things I'd ever seen aired: a newscast that was basically a series of teasers for another newscast. Schuster hit on this in his column over at the Weekly:

One amusing gaffe on 11 the other day they superimposed "Sen. John Kyle" on the screen at the beginning of the newscast and during the recap, obviously someone had called in they corrected it...well, sort of..."Sen. John Kyl" Still, Sen. Kyl's first name, Jon, was misspelled.

Still, it's good to see the commitment from 11 on building a 9:00 newscast from the ground up and you figure that they will continue to improve. I would probably switch the rankings of the two KMSB anchors but I agree with Schuster on the overall state of the 9:00 news in town and that KMSB is going in a favorable trend. Will have to see what the next step is over at WBA.

For a barebones operation, 11 is doing a lot more with less and I commend them for that. Perhaps if their parent company had a little more faith in the news op, it would receive an infusion of capital that's much needed to bring the newscast up to par with everyone else in town. In due time. But they're doing a decent job so far.

Gotta agree with you about 11's anchors. The chemistry between Deanna Morgan and the other people on the weekend seems to be much more jovial than during the weekday newscasts (maybe that's a result of Deanna being at the station longer-- after all, Lou Raguse is still new to town).

Next step for KGUN/KWBA, making sure people know there's a 9PM newscast on KWBA.
