I heard that KHCB-AM has a construction permit approved by the FCC. I believe KHCB-AM broadcast a Christian station named RAdio Amistad, which means Friendship Radio. Well this station has requested this permit since a long time ago. Does anybody know whats going on with this station? Have they already started construction, or what ever theyre going to do? How much better is the signal going to be if this deos happend???

KHCB on 1400 was a unique request as it is the 1st directional granted on a Class C frequency (Im not sure if others applied before but if they did, they were denied). I am not sure if they have started on it yet but they will move 1400 to League City from its current site on Galveston and go directional south. This will improve their signal into LC, TX City and maybe Clear Lake but it will keep them heard on the island quite well. Class Cs were originally designed to be "local" channels with 250 day/nite...later 1KW day/250 night; now 1KW full time and omni directional with one tower. KCHB, getting this CP, will push the door for other Class C AMs to go directional and try to improve signal in some areas and may cause a mess..I think it was a mistake by the FCC to do this but then it was a mistake to allow the Class C to go 1KW at night too....it just added to the noise floor...

That's what I thought, too. But actually the door was already open for "graveyard" frequency directionals. Mike_O and I had a discussion about that last year and I missed one: WOYL 1340 Oil City PA runs 1,000 watts directional days and non-directional nights. I don't know when they got the authorization for it but it may have been a few years ago.

It looks like persistence paid off for KHCB since the signal will definitely be improved by going directional and moving northward off the island. The ground conductivity is better at the new site and the pattern (basically running NNW-SSE) will cover a lot more populated areas. They should have a pretty decent signal over southeast Harris County.
