KHEN - Henryetta

I seem to remember KHEN on 1590 back in the 70's, but my memory might be off.

From what I can gleam from Broadcasting Yearbooks, they came on the air July, 18th, 1956 in Henryetta, OK.
I have not found any information about when they ceased operations or changed calls to some other call letters, but when they signed on they were Country and Farm news.

Good question OKC. As I recall, both KHEN 1590 and it's FM counterpart were purchased to move the FM closer to the Tulsa market. I can remember driving by the KHEN tower on the turnpike and seeing two STL antennae pointed back toward Tulsa when the AM was still in operation. 99.5 KXBL (now owned by Journal) is still licensed to Henryetta. 99.5 could have been the sister station to KHEN or perhaps it was another. Two scenarios come to mind. Either it was another FM which changed city of license, then surrendered the license of the AM (leaving KXBL stuck in Henryetta as the only aural service); or the AM was dumped by the purchaser of the FM as not worth keeping on the air. Given the value of using an AM as a first service to a community (and keeping the door open to possible moves by the FM) I suspect the first scenario may be correct.

Someone has a better memory than me.

"Machiavellian" enough analysis for you?

1590 was KDLB by the time 99.5 was bought and moved into Tulsa. I actually remember seeing an old bumper sticker for KDLB 99.5 right about the same time Magic 99.5 became the Storm. I'm not sure if the same people bought 1590 or if anyone else had 99.5 between when it moved into Tulsa and when Swanson got it.

KDLB went silent more than 20 years ago and never came back. I believe it still had its license until the Telecomm Act forced stations dark more than a year off for good.

Ahhh...so 99.5 was the FM counterpart. That makes sense. Thanks Kent.

All that rings true to me. I remember KRMG's involvement in the deal.

I guess 99.5 can't move any closer to Tulsa, otherwise they would have kept the AM on the air to serve as the first aural service for Henryetta as they continued to try to move the FM.
