KHHO: Call The FCC!!

At 4:53 PM, Monday afternoon, driving along Hwy 169.

Listening to the ACLS game broadcast on ESPN Radio

Suddenly, dead air. Mikes being shuffled along, bumping and ambiate sound.

"Check, check, one, two..."

"Check, check, mike check."

"Hey this thing is in use..."

"What the ****?"

"This is going out over KHHO----"

Silence

ACLS play by play resumes....

We've all done that at least ONCE. My statement of surprise involved diety cursing a failed effort. Colorful and about as bowel lossening as anything I've ever done.

'loosening', you mean there - JDW ...
:)

When IMUS comes back on-air, heard they're gonna have a '40' second-delay this time around...

I would like to share my absolutely favorite moment with the F word on the radio.

Flashback to the golden days of KXRX....Beau Roberts was on the air, I was in the studio and Beau's mic was hot. Beau was doing a live read and towards the end of the live read Dave Prunty (Robin Erickson's husband and Production Directer for KXRX) walked into the studio and Beau saw him out of the corner of his and popped on the mic next to Dave. After the live read Beau turned off his mic, hit a spot and yelled at the top of his lungs (for whatever reason) "F**K YOU" !!!! It pinned the meters to say the least.

Dave and I stood there with our jaws wide open. Dave said to Beau "the second mic is still hot". Beau shot it off and his face was a little red. A few moments later (then Program Directer) Brew Micheals came in and asked "did I just hear that right"? Beau looked at him and quickly said "No...I yelled "Thank You". Brew said "I hope so".

I will never forget that moment.

I've been a regular KHHO listener since they went to Fox Sports Radio in 2000 and this isn't the first time they've had curse words go out on the air. A few years ago for example, I was listening to whatever show they had on, suddenly dead air then after a while I heard the voices of a couple of people; I had no idea who they were, talking casually and of course one of them during the conversation says the S word. Needless to say KHHO's had some technical problems before.

I've said "f--k" twice and "s--t" once on the air. All three times-all inadvertantly, slipped past the radar. But that was in 1992 when it was not really shocking enough to even get the attention it does now since Janet Jackson's overblown right nipple shot almost 4 years ago.

I especially think it's hilarious to listen to KUBE sometimes and hear tracks so filled with reverse-tracked expletives in their edited form, you haven't the foggiest idea of what the song is even about....

KHHO actually has it's own control room right next to KUBE's. I suspect, (as happens sometime), someone went into the room to use it as a production room, and accidentally used the KHHO program channel rather than a secondary, (Audition) channel.

Where were the old KTAC studios located? I remember listening to that station thinking it was very cool to have a Tacoma station that was all Tacoma.

KTAC studios were in the Tacoma Mall Office Building....Favorite watering hole was the Bottom of the Bon...
