KHJ transmiiter CP (93[0-1230-1580)

KHJ's CP for a new location puts it co-located with 1230 and 1580 on North Alvarado, moving from the longtime Venice Blvd. site. What's the reason for the change? And what the original station using what will become the 930-1230-1580 diplexed site? Is that the original KDAY location?

KHJ has been on the Alvarado site since late 2102. The towers on Venice came down at the end of February, 2013.

Go to Youtube and search on KHJ and Towers and you can see any of about a dozen videos of the two towers being pulled down. You'll also see how big the site was... millions of dollars in empty land in a highly developed area.

KHJ moved because the value of the land (and the taxes) continued to rise, and a real estate development was planned. Further, the continued decline of all Spanish language AMs made sustaining the heritage site impossible given the value of the land.

Like 1230, KHJ found advantages in diplexing because of the high costs of land, zoning restrictions and community issues like NIMBY protests.

The new 930 site on Alvarado has been the home of 1580 since KDAY went fulltime circa 1970, when it moved from its daytime-only site on National Blvd. in Santa Monica. 1230 moved up to Alvarado for good a couple of years ago after multiple attempts to move from its 1927-vintage hammock antenna west of downtown.

Thanks David and Scott. I knew that you two would have everything there is to know about this, including the odd ASRN with its 1947 date for the Alvarado site.

Was the old KOWL on National Blvd. directional or omni?
