KHJK is now...

...well i dont know what they are.. I don't even think they do.
Heard a legal ID that said: "KHJK La Porte Houston, A Cumulus Station, FM 103-7"

A sweeper that said FM 103-7 Houston's Adult Alternative Station
but then still hearing "The new 103-7 Jack FM" and "The new 103-7 FM" sweepers, I think I even heard one of the original Jack VO sweeps.
That station has become such a mess. It's a shame I used to like 103-7

Change your name, call it "new", forget about programming the music and let it auto-fill.

That's what it sounds like to me. (Sarcasm on the last part... hopefully.)

It has become a mess. Adding in unfamiliar music titles, transitioning out "Jack" in favor of just 103-7, can significantly effect carry over of cume to the new format and it totally diminishes any "oh wow" impact of whatever the new format turns out to be. They maintain the Jack brand on their website too. And the use of 'Jack' or not Jack on air is completely random. It would appear that, as is always the case in Cumulus, no one knows who is in charge of the product. Is it Jan, John, Val, the current GM, the current PD, the GSM? Who?

None of that matters because if it is deemed a failure (and they're sure headed that way) the local people get whacked, not the corporate guys. Let's not forget THE most important thing here: Lew wants another $10 million in 2009. Nothing else is as important.

Now, let me make this very clear. there is only one person in charge of programming at Cumulus. And certainly not the GM or the Program Director. Jan Jeffries is GOD of the company. He will tube every station he touches and has for years. The only saving thing about Jan and 103.7 is that they have never never ever been successful. So, he has nothing to lose.

103.7 - pack your bags and head back to Beaumont where you belong. I can't even hear the station on most days in SW Houston.

RGM

People aside, RADIOGM's statement is true. You cannot hear the thing. I have said it, posted it, and will believe it until I die. "If you ain't got the stick, you ain't got the stroke" -they can have the best programming in the world, but if you cannot hear it, it will never win, in this, the 4th largest metropolitan area in the world. Sad thing too, I happened to catch a break in afternoon drive the other day and thought "wow, I wish I could sound more like this guy"

If nobody is listening to 103.7, then does it really matter if they phase it in or if they go for an abrupt format change? Cumulus stations are Cume-less.

Wow in spite of all the negativity about this station I enjoy it. Go figure I like the one station everyone else hates. I get the station just fine in Friendswood in my car to my crappy alarm clock. I haven't heard most of the tunes in over a decade! The branding is bland though, and they do need to get their sweepers together and phase out the Jack sweepers. Give it some time, everyone is so quick to write off a new format.

Not so in Mo City, the Medical Center, the Galleria, Rice Village or Sugar Land. I heard more Faith Hill from KOUL in Corpus on 103.7 last night driving around than Train and Jack Johnson from KHJK. I would venture to guess that getting the station within their own studios takes some careful antenna aiming.

You can't be #1 if you can't be heard. AAA is a tough format to get numbers with on a full market signal. With a signal that covers 1/4 of the market (Friendswood, La Porte, Baytown), I just don't see it outperforming Jack (which isn't saying much).

As for whether or not they're making any money, when you hear pay-per-inquiry spots for "male enhancement" pills and freebie spots for HD Radio round the clock, the answer is no, they're not making any money either.

Like 97.5, 103.7 will never be a player because it doesn't cover the metro. The smart thing to do with a signal like that is run a low maintenance format that costs nothing to run and concentrate on local sales in the areas where the station can be heard. Why they took a low maintenance format like Jack that costs nothing to run and started adding expenses like an airstaff, I'll never understand. Did they not learn anything from KIOL?

Agree with everyone that their signal is non-competitive. Regardless of the program quality, if you can't hear it, you can't listen. PPM makes that an even more stark reality.

Remember, they moved those sticks (103.7 and 97.5) to Houston to increase the asset value within CMP. Just by having a dual city license that includes Houston and appearing above the line the facilities are worth more.

On 103.7, they are now on the third format in about 3 years. This is probably the worst because of the transition. Say what you please about Jan, but he is not stupid enough to sign off on that kind of slop. This mess is at someone elses hand. Best guess would be they didn't want to rock the boat with revenue on the books by making an outright change, so they transitioned. That's an unbelievably foolish choice made for all the wrong reasons.

An earlier poster said they've added an airstaff. Except for the on air PD, are there other on air talent doing regular shifts or tracked? Anyone know their names? Are they any good? I can't hear 103.7 well in my daily travels at all...it pops in and out so much it's annoying.

What's the betting pool for how long this one lasts?

There's a Steve Robison on now in the afternoons, evenings, and nights. He's okay. Not great -- just okay. It's so sad. I really liked the station when I found it a few months after it started. And I just found the station is simulcast in HD on 104.1-2 too. See, if this goes away there'll be nothing left for people like me who aren't really thrilled with KTBZ and don't like KKRW. There's only certain times I can listen to KUHF that I don't want to pull out my hair.

And the signal sucks in Klein.

I totally agree with what SMARTESTGUY is suggesting about AAA. It's been recently tried and has failed on powerful sticks in other major cities. And it was tried by companies with marketing dollars and actual on air talent. It really only works in certain granola cities that had it a long long time ago....meaning the late 80's and 90's. And the potential audience is already getting these songs from other media or other Houston stations

To me the new "format" is actually a less pop version of what Jack was. Less ACTUAL HITS, and on a bad stick. ???

It's also a less pop version of what Point is doing. Point is playing THE HITS of the 80's and more, and 103-7 is now playing a lot of non radio hits from the 80's and more.....on a bad stick! And the hits they do play? Pretty....sleepy.

As suggested in a previous post it seems like the format hole for a bad stick, is doing alternative with a 60/40 split of currents to gold. There's way too much gold on the new 103-7, and too much of the gold weren't even hits in the 80s or 90s. And let it rock a little more, not too much.. but damn...Sara McClachlan, mellow Zep and Talking Heads, Joan Osbourne, Jack Johnson and Wallflowers?! No thank you. And I'm in my mid 40's

But most of currents and recurrents are amazing! The new Kings of Leon is the best song of the year! And the new Green Day, U2, Death Cab, Coldplay and Killers sound amazing, but put in the Anberlin, Silversun Pickups, Depeche, Incubus and Shinedown(Second Chance). Lose the wallflower mentality... and get in the game!

People, you have a bad stick! Make people WANT TO FIND YOU AND ROOT FOR YOU!

Nobody is rooting for Counting Crows, Jason Mraz and Ray friggin' Lamontagne!! All the best to them, but nobody is seeking a station playing them!

A possible scenario: Could this just be a first step?...a step to something more....gosh that would be good!

Maybe if they get bombarded with mail about this they'll do something that works and we actually like.

It's official now.
Just heard the words

JACK FM is now 103.7 FM. :(

??? ??? ???

Houston is the 4th largest city in the nation, nowhere near #4 metro in the US or the world!

Early this morning about 2:30 am as I was pulling into my driveway, I heard, "Houston's New 103-7 Jack FM". Then earlier as im driving out I hear another one, "The New 103-7 Jack FM". Huh???
