Montana KHKM Hamilton flips from Christian Country to AAA

Huge competition for the Trail. 103.3 is one of my favorite AAAs- hope this one coming in doesn't kill them. Certainly a MUCH bigger signal than 103.3
Some of the '80s and older songs on KHKM would likely be heard on The Big 100 up in Bigfork as well. They are one of my favorite things about traveling to MT. No stream to this day, yet the classic hits mix is unpredictable, leaning towards classic rock and softer rock (very little R&B), and a lot of oh wow's. Signal gets as far as Hamilton and Victor (but weakly).
The "Hawk" sales price was just $150,000 - a bargain for a Class C1 , 100 kw per the FCC filing The antenna site will be tough to access in the winter. The GM filed to buy the station. (Michael Gerdes wanted to buy KCAY but then the FCC got word that the seller potential (and illegally) moved the CP to an urbanized area , which the FCC does not normally permit. Mr. Gerdes thankfully walked away from that mess before things got ugly. ) I am him well with the Hawk. Now that two Missoula signals are off the air he may reach success.

I like his work and wish him well, but these things are often sales issues. KDTR is part of a cluster that can sell their established brand with other stations in the package, and the Hawk is an indie. Hope it works out for him and he's got a strategy to counter that.

KCAY was not exactly illegally moved from a rural area to an urbanized one. The FCC approved an initial application for KCAY in 2022 and its grant had been final for over two years. The trouble arose when the applicant subsequently attempted to move the permit again to an urban community, which the Commission did dismiss, as the two moves taken together were apparently contrary to its Rural Radio policies. In an unfortunate twist, the second proposed KCAY community of license move has been filed in an attempt to accommodate Mr. Gerdes' intended antenna site for the station, which ultimately would have required another community of license change. Shortly after that application was disposed of, KCAY's assignment to Gerdes and Associates did not consummate due to the buyer's financial backers disappearing, so the original permittee had to handle the ensuing consequences. At present, KCAY does have a pending application to be sited at a community just north of its originally permitted location.

When you attempt to access the "98.7 The Hawk" website it now takes you to the " Utah's Mountain " .

Was wondering what happened. I checked on 98.7 a couple weeks ago and found the "Christian Country" format back on again. I had listened in after the 1st of the year when "The Hawk" was born. Not really my style but I did recognize the exact format (same guy) as 107.9 KUMT-Utah's Mountain as I had a loud and clear signal in Wyoming where I was when they were on the air there. Funny...I remember hearing a promo on "The Hawk" saying they were looking for announcers and sales people and to go to their website to submit a resume. Thought about doing that.
Hope something can become of KHKM. Loved it when Cherry Creek had it with "Max 98.7" but I'm an AC guy. It's a hard sell - the station has a pounding 100kw signal but it's on Reed Butte in Stevensville, MT. As contours would show, we SHOULD have a city-grade signal from Hamilton to Missoula. But that's not the case. (funny since Hamilton is the COL) Even at that high power, multi-path is still multi-path. So the signal isn't perfectly clear and instead is fuzzy unless you're in the middle of the valley around Stevensville and Florence. Whoever would get it would have to have a translator (like Cherry Creek did) in Missoula. That'd be the only way to make anything of it.
