KHMX-HD

Anyone know if KHMX will ever fix their HD signal? It seems like it has been months since it has decoded in my car. Interestingly, I get the song information and it doesn't appear to be from RDS...but never decodes.

It’s been like that since at least the morning of 3/17/24. KLTN was like that too when their HD was on.

Been over a year since KHMX decoded on my car radio. No problems with any other HD station.

Never had any issues with HD on KLTN when they were on the Ennis tower.

Not sure what area and what HD radio you have. My Belar HD monitor shows everything is good with KHMX HD signal.. On KLTN is was working fine back in 3/17/24. Maybe look into a better HD radio or improve signal.. Image attached , even artist experience is working for album art.

I have a home HD radio (Sparc SHD-T750) that can decode KHMX HD. It's the only radio I own that can decode it. Usually, I tune to the station, hear the analog sound for a few seconds, then it goes silent. Shortly after, the HD feed starts playing, a few seconds delayed from the analog.
If I move the antenna anywhere the HD signal is weak, the sound simply drops to silence. It does not switch back to the analog signal. I also have seen a friend's vehicle that does the same thing with KHMX HD.

There's no way Audacy Houston engineering hasn't noticed this issue, right? Every time I message Mix about the issue, they say their HD signal is 'Off,' but it clearly is not. Sad to see a station get so neglected in market #6. The analog signal sounds terrible. The HD actually sounds great (if you have a radio that can decode it lol). KHMX is my #2 preset, yet I can barely stand to listen to it for more than a few minutes in the car recently.

There is not an issue. I also have a Sparc desktop radio and its probably the worse one in receiving HD. Sangean tuners are probably the same. The tuners i use are near the Galleria area , signal is pretty good here. Not sure what area your listening at. HD signal is not like FM, further away from Tower, HD goes away, signal is not good enough to decode and much less to display data like artist experience album art. A distant FM simply goes static. If you hear any static on FM, then HD is not going to work well.

It’s not a signal issue with KHMX. All the other HDs from the Senior Road tower are decoding properly, as well as all the other Houston market HD signals. Something is not right with the KHMX HD.

There has been past discussion about the use of “extended HD” and how some HD receivers might have trouble decoding it. It is usually employed for an HD-4, but is it possible that KHMX is using it for the HD-1?

It's not a signal issue. I've even tried really close to the tower. Here's how some of my radios act. None have ever locked in. KLTN HD was like that and same with KLQB but it's been awhile since I've been to Austin. Also KORA was like that as well. Those stations I could tune the subchannels but going back to HD1 just flashes.

SPARC SHD-TX2
Flashes and shows KHMX but no song info

Sangean HDR-14
Flashes and shows the song info and program type.

Sangean HDR-18
Same as above but does not show the program type.

extended HD is used for HD-2 thru HD-4. There are three service modes for HD, MP1 thru MP3, the mode you select depends on how much bandwidth you wish per audio channel, plus the data for artist experience etc. khmx is on MP3 service mode. my desktop Sparc SHD-T750 is locked on khmx signal without issue, displays the album art and song info. but i have the same issue as others with sangean tuner, on stations with MP1, it simply does not lock on the HD1 but does on 2 and 3. On my Pioneer automobile tuner, i dont have any issues in my vehicles radio, it displays artist albums or station logo on every hd channel. even my Sparc and the most expensive tuner i have Belar FM HD monitor has trouble. I beleive its simply the tuner or electronic decoders of these devices having trouble.

Mix is sounding extra rough this afternoon. It’s got a very loud crackling/popping noise in the audio.
Both analog and HD.

Edit: This has been fixed as of 5:48!

Still sounds very bad, though, like someone cranked the midrange to absurdly high.
