KHNL Channel 8 Honolulu Question

Was just looking thru the Honolulu Websites (it's getting cold in Chicago

Although lists KHNL as Channel 13, the website says Channel 8. This link says KHNL changed from Channel 13 to Channel 8.

Since Honolulu also has a Channel 9 how is is possible for KHNL to move to Channel 8? Or is KHNL using channel 8 like a cable branding thing?
______________

Cable branding. Honolulu has huge cable penetration and a near-universal channel lineup statewide, so KHNL can brand itself as 8 and get away with it. It's still 13 over-the-air.
______________

Most of the stations have repeaters on all the inhabited islands...At one time, KHNL had a repeater on one of teh big islands that was OTA channel 8.

According to the information I found at http://www.tvradioworld.com/region2/hwa/tv_information.asp it appears that OTA repeater was taken back and reissued as a DT station for one of KGMB's repeaters.

KHON-2-Fox broadcasts on the following OTAs:
KHON-2-Honolulu/DT-22
KAII-7-Maui/DT-36
KHAW-11-Hilo/DT-21
K55DZ-55-Kauai

KITV-4-ABC broadcasts on the following OTAs:
KITV-4-Honolulu/DT-40
KMAU-12-Maui/DT-29
KHVO-13-Hilo/DT-18
K51BB-51-Kauai

KGMB-9-CBS broadcasts on the following OTAs:
KGMV-3-Maui/DT-24
KGMD-9-Hilo/DT-8
KGMB-9-Honolulu/DT-8
K57BI-57-Kauai
K69BZ-69-Kauai

KHNL-13-NBC broadcasts on the following OTAs:
KHBC-2-Hilo/DT-22
KHNL-13-Honolulu/DT-35
KOGG-15-Maui/DT-16
K65BV-65-Kauai

KFVE-5-WB broadcasts on the following OTAs:
KFVE-5-Honolulu/DT-23
K27DW-27-Maui
K44DQ-44-Honolulu
K45CT-45-Hilo
K63DZ-63-Maui

KHET-11-PBS broadcasts on the following OTAs:
K04FE-4-Hilo
KMEB-10-Maui/DT-30
KHET-11-Honolulu/DT-18
K63DT-63-Kauai
K67AV-67-Kauai

Those are the big 5 or 6 that I could find.

And KHNL has used the "8" branding since becoming an NBC affiliate. When it lost Fox to KHON 2 in the '90s and picked up the NBC affiliation, it debuted with a "News 8" branding. It hasn't been "13" since its Fox days. One kind of odd thing is that KHON 2's digital channel, KHON-DT, is channel 8. If KHON elects to stay there once the transition is over, it might be kind of weird for KHNL to profess to be on channel 8 when over the air KHON is there.

Honolulu is interesting in that it is one of the few markets where all the affiliates still brand with their call letters. When I was there this spring, none of them -- Fox KHON, ABC KITV, WB KFVE, CBS KGMB, or NBC KHLN -- have surrendered their local identities to become yet another "ABC4," "WB5," or "CBS9." The only outlet to lose itself was the PBS outlet -- KHET now just "PBS Hawaii."

KHNL was actually known as "NBC Hawaii" for several years after the affiliation switch (which I suppose made sense, since they'd want people to know they're the new NBC affil), and the newscasts were titled "NBC Hawaii News 8". I think they only switched (back?) to using their calls on-air within the last year.
______________

Correction, the two stations above swapped digitals in the last year or two. The correct list is

KHON-2 Honolulu/DT-8
KGMB-9 Honolulu/DT-22

This was so that both could have VHFs after the transition (KHON elected 8, KGMB elected 9).

It may be off-topic, but by the time that happens, they won't have the same owners, with Emmis selling KHON to SJL while KGMB is expected to go to another company soon.
