KHOU's Brad Woodard smokes while he's on the Job.

Come on people. Get a grip. Lots of reporters smoke. And he was far enough away from the fire to be safe having a smoke. The official in charge of the scene wouldn't have allowed it if they weren't a safe distance from it.

I've covered lots of oil and chemical fire stories like that one and I can testify that FD officials won't allow anybody to smoke if they don't think it's safe.

Having said that, I do agree it was bad form for Woodard to allow himself to be caught taking a final drag. He knew the anchor was going to toss it to him -- so he should have stubbed it out well before the toss. It just didn't look good.

Lots of radio oldtimers believed smoking helped "warm up the pipes." Maybe it did. But lots of radio oldtimers also died from cancer.

If you want to see a "smokin' reporter," just go to Fox News... but I digress... ::)

Bigger picture: The surgeon general doesn't think it's safe to smoke.

On KHOU's Facebook page, Reporter Brad Woodard has issued a statement of apology:

Dear Viewers,

Some of you have raised concerns about my live report from Chambers County on Friday, June 24th. Due to a technical glitch, I was observed on camera smoking and extinguishing a cigarette, something I find both professionally and personally embarrassing. I was reporting from the scene of... a fire at an abandoned “tank farm” formerly used to store petroleum products. The fire was well under control at the time of my report, and I was standing on concrete when I discarded my cigarette. I also made sure it was extinguished following my brief report.

Apparently, some of you are under the impression I was reporting from the scene of a wild fire. That was not the case. My bad habit aside, I’m very cognizant of the extreme drought conditions facing this state. I report on those conditions daily and care very deeply about those affected. That said, I sincerely apologize to those of you who were offended. We appreciate...I appreciate...your viewership and your concerns.

Regards,

Brad Woodard

Ah... the TV newsies' nemesis... a viewer complaining about a segment he/she didn't actually see on-air... but was told to complain by someone who probably didn't see it firsthand either... but was sent a link to an edited version of it on youtube.

Brad is a very good investigative reporter. His stories are usually the most interesting thing on KHOU. If the worst thing he does is smoke on camera...more power to him! With all the lame stories out there that get covered someone with his chops should never have been made to apologize.

But someone from Belo should buy him some Chantix for Christmas this year LOL

I don't know... did you see all of the crazy side effects? It takes roughly half of a two-minute commercial to go over them all!

The side effects are minimal....Terrets, ansomnia, mental retardation, uncontrollable diareah, spastic urination, and B.O. Nothing to serious!! At least there are no sexual side effects LOL so life is good with Chantix

Oh no, a news reporter smokes? Say it isn't so! I'm sure his buddies and bystanders at the bars could care less if he lights up. It's not like he was smoking crack on live TV.
