KHOU's New News Set

Sometime this week or last week, KHOU debuted a new set. It looks temporary and cramped--looks like in their conference room. I heard yelling from the newsroom (which could be seen through the window between the vertical blinds behind their makeshift plasma TV backdrop) which leads me to venture that the room isn't soundproofed.

Could Channel 11 be the final station in Houston to renovate their news set? The others already did (including Channel 2 retiring their infamous NewsCenter set after almost 15 years and going back into the conventional news studio.). ABC 13 doesn't look as contemporary as sister KABC-TV's semi-circular video wall (that hearkens back to the KYW-TV chroma blue backdrop) but still looks stunning.

Looks like it will be temporary because Channel 11 has shuttered its main news studio, and during that time they plan to rebuild it-from scratch. The brand-new 11 News studio will make its debut sometimes in September or October.

Sounds like the current Belo M.O., that happened here in Dallas while they designed and built the new set at WFAA.

I noticed in watching the Dan Cook coverage on KENS (San Antonio), they had a new set as well.

I thought they used their old set at the station while they built the new studio at Victory Park. Did they completely relocate to Victory Park or was it just some operations?

I believe ABC-13 happens to be a clear winner among all of the news sets which wer constructed within the couple of years; Followed by Local 2(Their News STILL suck); Channel 11(Their set looks kinda like the one you see on Cable Access TV) is third; and lastly, FOX-26; As they plan to debut its hourly late afternoon newscast in August.

WFAA does Daybreak and Midday at Victory Park every day (along with Good Morning Texas). They may do the 5 p.m. newscast there every day (I'm sure someone will know for sure); 6 and 10 rotate between there and the Young Street studios.

I think Channel 11 might think about doing their news in Downtown Houston-at a streetside studio-where everybody can watch live and in person. Just like "The Today Show".

Now that'll be kind of cool for downtown houston...any idea where the site will be?

If (though I find it very unlikely) it would make sense to do it along the Main Street @ Dallas pedestrian mall (Foley's/Macy's corner). However, Houston is assuredly not a city one wants to stand around in watching the back of the anchor's head during a newscast.

They would have better luck building a "street level" studio inside the Galleria or down in the tunnels!

Very nice for a temp set. Makes me wonder if the vertical blinds were there because the newsroom upgrade hadn't been completed yet.

A note on the view behind the desk: this shot was often used during newsroom stand-up reports. The monitors hang about half-way through the newsroom and the background that shows the 11News logo is either a skin applied to, or a duratran placed in front of the windows, which overlook Allen Parkway.

All done! I noticed it watching the 10pm news. Wasn't expecting the new set today.

Saw the morning show promo during commercials and the bragging about the new set was nauseating after going through the FOX 26 5/5:30 news promos for the past few weeks.
