Mid-day jock Heather Walters leaves KHPT for the Big Apple (WWFS) to take over mid-days. What will it take for the Point to change formats?

Just because the station she is on may (in your opinion) suck, does not mean that she does. So how many of you who posted on this thread got a call from CBS to go to the number one market in America? I'm guessing none. Because if you did, your a$$ would be pulling a U-Haul there this weekend.

Just because a company makes the choice not to utilize a persons' talent, does not mean the person in question has none. Heather did all right. Perhaps one of you should apply for her old gig-if you've got the stuff to get it.

Way to go Holstead. Your exactly right. Heather has a great voice and her hiring proves finally that you don't have to have the ratings to get the big jobs. Talent counts and Heather has the talent. Congrats Heather, enjoy the big apple and thanks for proving that talent still rules in radio.

Heather has always been kind to me...except when it came to the setting of the thermostat for the studios... She likes to make men sweat.

I think one of the key ingredients in her getting the NY gig may have been the fact that she actually applied. Its kinda like playing the lotto... you can't win if you don't play.

You know, there's actually something to that. I'm not looking for anything, however I look at the job postings everyday...mainly for gossipy type stuff (seeing if anybody I know got fired, etc.) But as I browse, I think to myself, if I WAS looking, how few of the opeings I would actually apply to. In today's radio environ, it's very hard to even think about packing up and leaving for a new gig if you feel pretty stable at the gig you're at. So I'd imagine, now more than ever, that for the fear of making a huge mistake, A LOT of really talented folks aren't even applying for gigs that are open and would otherwise look very attractive.

Well, the other side of that is if you CAN'T apply for a job. Granted, if you work for the company that is offering the job you MIGHT be able to talk your present PD into letting you persue it. But if you are under contract, a real binding executed agreement, you are off the market as long as the term of your deal is. In most cases long after it has expired.

I am sure there are some managers who might take into consideration personal issues that may require a person to move, but other than that you are stuck. Which in a lot of cases, ain't such a bad place to be. (like middays in Houston as Heather is/was) It is my hope that Cox saw that there was no opportunity like the one she was offered, could not match it, and let her fly. To quote David Letterman when Joan Lunden left GMA, "now you can go to work for CBS and make some real money"-I hope Heather does.

Also-Good point Kevin: you can't get the gig unless you apply for it. When I was in Memphis at a Country Radio seminar few weeks ago I had no less than a dozen pople ask me how I landed my weekly Westwood One show. My response: I applied for it.

holstead: i couldn't agree more. well said. like anything...if you want stuff in life you have to ask for it. no one in this business is ever 'asked' to do a radio gig; anyone who gets anywhere in radio works hard; stays focused; keeps a positive attitude; is inspired by something...whatever. yes there's luck...and timing. but there are no short cuts. way to go heather. more trailblazers from texas making a bee line for the big apple...rock on.

I've known Heather for quite a while and although she's very excited about NY, she's also very sad about leaving her hometown of Houston. She had high hopes for KHPT when she first acepted the job but those hopes never materialized. The station hasn't done much, if anything, to improve it's standing within Houston. Rowdy hit the nail on the head when he said, just beause the staion doesn't perform well, doesn't mean the talent is on the same level. Heather has, on her own, actively pursued v/o work in smaller and sometimes bigger markets. She has made her own destiny and just like Rowdy are starting to see the fruits of their labor. Some of you make disparaging comments but can you honestly look in the mirror and say you've done everything you can to better your career? Most can't. I say good luck Heather!

My sentiments exactly, Kevin. She's not gonna be real comfortable in NYC, because she lacks the body fat to keep warm. Heather, you gotta eat something, or else we're gonna have a telethon for you. (swaying back n forth) "We are the World.... We are the Heather." Seriously, Im gonna miss you jacking up my thermostat every day, and sharing a little of the latest dirt. Also that cookware you & Charles got us for the wedding ROOOOCKS! We're all gonna come barging in to your house when you get up there, so be ready....

Sorry to get off topic, but how many stations are you on now, Rowdy?

Country Gold is on about 100 markets, 59 of them are rated. That number is expected to rise. Country 6 Pack clears 300 stations, but that is only on holidays 6 times a year. I have never had so much fun!
