It seems a lot of Christian stations have a stated meaning behind their assigned call letters. KGLY, here in Tyler, is "Know God Loves You". Houston's KSBJ is "Knowing Something Better, Jesus". KHCB, also in Houston, is "Keeping Him Close By". Clever enough, I suppose.

Often station call letters were already assigned. For example, HCJB, the huge shortwave operation of decades past, was given those calls in the early 30's. They came up with "Heralding Christ Jesus' Blessing" as a meaning based on what they were given.

Of course calls can have different meanings in different situations. The KHSH call caught my eye, as it was used on TV Channel 67 here in Houston when it was a Home Shopping Network affiliate from 1987 to 2002. In that case it stood for “Home Shopping Houston”.

NJ daytimer WKMB originally stood for K & M Broadcasters, the last names of its owners, Kelly and Michels. When it was sold to a church and became a Gospel music format, they said the KMB now stands for "Keeping Me Blessed".

Many of those stated meanings are created retroactively.

I think KHCB started off meaning K Houston Christian Broadcasting, for example.

Not a Christian radio station, but I've found the KHTS call letters interesting. The Santa Clarita station states it stands for "Home Town Station," years ago when call letters mattered I could see a top 40 outlet clamoring for those call letters.

I was told that the call letters for heritage gospel station WPCE in Norfolk, Virginia stand for "Where Prayer Changes Everything." Made sense to me...

Fascinating. I've always known that the "HC" call sign prefix belongs to Ecuador, but for some reason I thought that the organization was allowed to pick the call letters. Had no idea they were assigned.

What mix do they play? Is it a lot like the Crossing used to be in San Diego or is it a different variety such as a mix of Southern Gospel CCM rap worship and alt rock etc.?
