KHTC/Minneapolis-St. Paul: "We will still be much more dance—focused"

Even to the name "96.3 NOW", I see them more like our New York equivalent "92.3 NOW". They may play dance in there and that's always a good thing, but based on 92.3 NOW, I would expect the station to be "rhythmic" in nature.

Tony, I think you nailed it. This is another abomination of the word "dance" to describe something entirely not dance.

It appears that the station thinks that dance music is, as a genre, top-40 pop music by the likes of Britney, Miley, Lil' Wayne, Beyonce, etc. That's not dance. Dance music is, as a genre, primarily music by artists who identify as dance artists and make music for clubs - this does not automatically mean deep house or 10-minute trance tracks - it includes many hooky, melodic, vocal songs that contain the same structural elements as any top-40 hit. Any fan of actual dance music sampling this station expecting to hear dance music will be disappointed...and angry that FM radio has again misled them.

This station and others like it can certainly play the artists listed above...just please, don't call them dance or let them play the role of dance when no actual dance music exists in the format. There are plenty of dance songs and artists available to play - both current and classic - that fit a CHR format; may I suggest, in no particular order and without giving it hours of thought: "I'll Fly With You"..."Kernkraft 400"..."Heaven"...the new AnnaGrace "Love Keeps Calling"...a few tracks from Tiesto's "Kaleidoscope" album (and some of his catalog material)..."Sandstorm" (much as it's played out to many of us, top-40 can still get away with it)..."One More Time"..."Castles In The Sky"..."Music Sounds Better With You"..."Satisfaction"...a number of Jes songs..."Better Off Alone"...Kaskade...Armin van Buuren's songier side.

This is the same station that proclaimed this week in a newspaper article that, "We won't play Disney pop like the Jonas Brothers or rock stuff like Nickelback and Shinedown," yet launched the modified format with Disney darling Miley Cyrus's "Party In The USA." (I think it plays ex-Mousekateer Britney, too.) Nice way to start.

I'm not holding my breath on hearing dance on KHTC. Now or later. Ain't happenin', much as I would love to be proven wrong.

According to Yes.com, KHTC played both "One More Time" and "Better Off Alone" the other day. Though I agree that the quote was likely intended to refer to rhythmic product, not dance.

Man even Party FM doesn't play those songs anymore. Funny how I used to listen to Party 105.3 when I was out in Tanger in Riverhead, only to hear Better Off Alone playing over the Muzak sound system and Party playing Lil' Wayne.
Now PartyFM seems to think rhythmic means dance, 'cause they really dont sound that different from any rhythmic CHR these days.

At least Minneapolois has a good internet dance station in Energy 87.9.....

I think Miley Cyrus's hit is popular due to the wall of text when it comes to the lyrics of the song. Of course when it has that laid back, but fun themed patriotic sound, it will gain massive response. Also, at some point, we will all be forced to realize and learn that all people must grow up and can't remain "disney" forever just because they started out as or were known as "disney". Although she still may be "disney" now, I believe at some point she should have the right to... ok maybe I shouldn't use the word "right", but PRIVILEGE to grow out of the disney label and have the freedom to just be another regular artist. She may be disney, but I wouldn't consider "Party in the USA" to really be "a disney song". I actually think it's one of the more mature songs she has done (well it's pretty much the only Miley hit I'm familiar with). I believe labels can help to hurt or make people and certain things not be all they can be, and I think the same way the "disney" label hurts or limits certain people from a stereotypical standpoint, I believe that the label "dance" or even "techno" can do the same.

A good (MODERNIZED, 2010) example of dance music and sound should be and include the following:

Agnes - Release me
Jay Sean - Down
Calvin Harris - flashback
Akon - Beautiful
Sneaky Sound System - I will be here
2PM - Again & Again
Dj Mad - Put ur drinks up
Black Eyed Peas - Boom boom pow
INNA - amazing
Meleka - go
Judy Torres ft Bonnie Stone - Hell no (Carlos Berrios Mix)
Basic Element - Touch you right now
Pitbull - Shut it down
Annagrace - Let the feelings go
LMFAO - Shots!
Egypt - In the morning
Platnum - trippin
David Guetta ft Akon - Sexy Bitch
Flo Rida - In the ayer
Jeremih - Imma Star (Max Method's Remix)
Cascada - Evacuate the dancefloor
Alex Sayz - Shame on me
Jay Sean - Do you remember
The Egyptian Lover - Freaky DJ
Dj Antoine - underneath
Kim Leoni - Medicine
Britney - 3

I don't think certain hits (such as certain electronic ones by Britney, and a few others) should be ignored, simply because of the fact that she's very well known, popular, famous, and people don't like that, because I guarantee you that if the same exact beat were used with a new, unknown singer, dance fans would've been about 80 times more shocked and impressed. I do agree however that NONE of Lil Wayne's productions fit the dance category at all (UNLESS of course you are one of those people going by that rule "dance music is anything you can dance to" and then playing "get busy" by Sean Paul afterwards.... but I will not get into that story since that does not fit into my frame of thinking). I'm not exactly sure if I'd place any of Beyonce's hits in the dance music category.

I've been having a similiar discussion regarding mainstream/underground artists on here.

Apparently to some, once you're mainstream anything you do automatically is no longer an underground sound no matter how edgy it is.
