KIAS NOW COME WITH HD RADIO

My goodness. I come here tonight and the anti guys are now proclaiming how ridiculous it is that HD radios are going to be available in Kia cars.

I guess we'll just file this as "another nail in the HD coffin." :)

Sounds like dying technology to me.

Retrofitting HD into Yugos.

I was going to say Skodas. But then I read where Skodas are actually better built and have higher customer satisfaction than Volkswagens (who owns the company).

Ah, those clever Poles.

I must have missed something.

Re-reading my initial post, I didn't see anything where I said, "another nail in the HD coffin" or 'dying technology'. I was simply putting down Kias.

Getting touchy there, Inspector.

You can file this under: From the sublime to the ridiculous.

Kia has announced they will be offering factory-installed HD Radio receivers in sedans and SUVs, starting in 2010.

So what's next? HD Radio in Trabants?

C5

Trabants don't have enough power left over to run the HD chipset.

Whle the Poles are no doubt clever, Skodas are built in the Czech Republic. Even during the Communist years, Skodas were better quality than many west European cars.

How long will it be before Kia owners return the radios complaining about reception problems, a la Jaguar, BMW and Ford?

...and you accuse the rest of us of needless sarcasm. If the insult fits...

Putting HD radios into a line of cars with a US market share of less than three percent isn't exactly going to set the world on fire.

Ah, those clever Czechs! Thanks for the correction.

Nor did I attribute them to you. Talk about touchy...

I DID point out that this was again spun in a non positive light, with regard to HD radio. As I read your post, I assumed it was about HD radio and not quality or status of Kia Vehicles. If in fact you intent was to exhault HD radio's good fortune and disparage the Kia Motor company, I beg your forgiveness. I DO notice my observation was stated more clearly later when someone mentioned market share al la...

.

If you feel I slighted you, please feel free to consider my observation as a prediction. One that has already come true.

As you know, I have been saying that the key to HD radio success, IMHO, is "INCLUSION". Not an I-Phone like rocket, followed 2 years later by obsolescence, but slowly and surely being included in products which are purchased ANYWAY. Not that he's my favorite guy, but Mark Ramsey actually had this one right.

There WAS a time when some people would have been concerned about this type of framing of HD radio positive news. Now, considering the arena, I think most people expect it.

Actually, KIA's market share for 2008 was about flat with 2007 when it hit 1.9%. Not bad for a Korean second-tier import teamed with Hyundai. And of course, if Kia includes HD, that's good news for the system.

In the end, though, I believe it's meaningless in terms of marketing impact. HD radios still suffer from serious reception problems in cars. Coincidentally I was seeing my friend at the Jag dealer earlier in the week. I asked: any plans to reintroduce HD Radio any time soon? He sarcastically retorted, sure - as soon as they make the damn system work. He said he had just retrofitted a 6-month old Jag with a factory mod to defeat HD (or replace the radio, not sure which) just that week. He added that Land Rover, which is co-sold with Jaguar, has followed suit and dumped HD because of consumer complaints. (On the showroom floor was a Range Rover with a sticker topping $93,000. The radio in that thing had BETTER freakin' work flawlessly.)

(Excuse me. Gotta tweak a "certain poster who has adopted the handle of a French 1960s movie slapstick detective played by Peter Sellers.")

Bob, you forgot one...

"Gee our old LaSalle ran great...(until they put in HD radio)...those were the days!" :D

And then there was the NSU with the Wankel engine. Now there's a combination: HD Radio in an Wankel engine NSU.

I could comment on that pairing but won't.

A splendid accomplishment for the HD folks. Too bad HD radio is dying on the AM band, and FM stations may be next to drop it due to lack of interest.
