What is the fascination about doing Country in Wichita? Almost every station has tried it. Only 1240, 97.1, 103.7, and 107.3 have never been Country. The station they should bring back is Flight 100.5. The AAA format had non radio people raving about in on Facebook. That was the first time in years I had seen regular people.excited about a.radio station.
Country is an easy sell in the market. Wichita has long been one of country’s best markets.
And Flight’s not coming back…I personally know the person who put the format together; after the AMP sale didn’t go through, they got a different job outside of radio and is not involved with Murfin.

That's a shame but not surprising. It seemed there was an audience for it that was passionate about it. I just think if you are going to do Country...it needs to be different or have a twist to it.

The ‘My Country’ brand, from what I’ve heard over the years, will be a mix of current/gold country and red dirt, which has been a fairly strong genre that sells well in the market.

I can’t say I was surprised by that announcement, but I was hopeful it would do something else. Wichita needs country station #6 as much as we need bullets in our brains.
And that’s not even including 102.9 & 106.1 targeting Hutch. I know plenty people who have them on presets. Throw in 98.3 which has Wichita in its TOH ID and we’re really partying here. lol

KS Radio Geek is right when he says Wichita loves its country. Wichita and OKC seem to love country more than anywhere else, at least if number of stations in the format home to the market is any indicator.

I suppose Wichita doesn’t really get a ton of agency buys, but agencies almost never buy more than three deep in any format. Even three deep isn't all that common. So, at least three of those country stations are never going to see agency business. Maybe the market has enough local direct that those extra stations can be supported. Then again, in the late 90’s, Entercom tried country on 105.3 and found out that wasn’t sustainable. Journal couldn’t make hot country work in combination with KFDI and ultimately took its tag team partner regional Mexican. 100.5’s previous owner also found making a run at country wasn’t as easy as it thought. Wichita loves country, but it probably has more country than it can comfortably support.

Hey, ksradioggek ... You should hit me up on Facebook so we can talk more about this.

I will say this. RED DIRT has no business on the radio. It doesn't matter if they like it. Does everyone else?

Rock 100.7 I disagree with you about Red Dirt music.

There are successful Red Dirt stations in Texas and probably other places that have been on for a while. KFWR? KHYI? KRMX? KOKE FM? KNBT?
Those are all Texan stations, but I have heard red dirt in other states.
Texas and some other places near it are kind of big on their local country. Some demographics anyway.

I'm sure there are others.

It's a really small niche. Some, or even all, of those stations might make money, but they don’t have many listeners.

I get what My Town/Murfin is trying to do, though. Given how many country stations Wichita has, it’s trying to differentiate its station from the others. It also may think those other stations have a good model to follow for getting business with lower ratings. It surely knows it won’t beat KFDI and/or KZSN. So, it's going to have to rely on local and non traditional revenues.
